Today, I was amazed to learn that the current ideas of how a trout decides the worthiness of a meal are totally correct. I watched a brown of considerable length and girth rise up toward my dry fly, follow it downstream not more than an inch below the floating caddis imitation, whip out a calculator, and add up the nutritional value of my fly. Of course, he was assuming it was a real caddis, but no matter...when he'd totalled the numbers, it figured not to be worth it, so he sketched a little picture of the fly in a notebook( with the caption - .0023 grams - not worth the effort from this angle) and sulked back into his holding lie. I think it was an old Texas instruments model, so they still aren't too smart - Everyone knows that all the hip trout use a laptop computer nowadays.
BUT it does prove that they always calculate the value of the food before expending the energy to get it.....I just wonder where they learn all that algebra?

Next year, I just might take my taxes down to the local pond to hunt out a bass for a second opinion on my return. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif

Trout learn because they travel in SCHOOLS. You ought to know that Owl. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
you forgot that the trout factored in the amount of energy expended in pursuing said caddis imitator and rounded of to the nearest thousandth then had to figure in the water temp squared. Thats how he deduced that your caddis imitation wasn't worth the effort. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif

Owl, Your theory is correct. That is why I was using a hopper this past week on the raven fork, the fish said they could figure out that a big hopper was worth the effort by just counting on their fins http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

Owl.hehe. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif You funny boy.

Soooooo, the bigger the bug the more likely the trout is going to expend the energy to obtain the bug. Makes sense to me. So long as they aint wimp trout who are afraid to buck up at a big & tasty insect.

So what up with trout sippin 40's. I mean #22's. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

I guess the small bug eatin goes down in the calm water and the big bug eatin happens in the fast water shoal type areas. Makes enough common sense.

fishinpreacher, preach it brotha. The energy expended times the water temp squared divided by the nutritional content times the current speed.

Its a hot day of fishing an undisclosed brookie stream in the mountans, The Owl builds a powerful thirst. He reaches for his faithful Dew. Just before he drinks, he sees that his favorite beverage is purple. He stops. Stares. Puts the can down and reaches for another. Its purple too. How long will this go on til Owl tries the purple Dew?
It probably has more to do with how thirsty you are versus calories, nutrition, color etc.

But you didn't say if the Dew was half full, full or just a sip. Thats where you have to figure in the nutritional value, air temp squared, etc. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

Right FOTW. That's what I was saying. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

There's a theory out there tha states that trout weigh the value of a food item against teh amount of energy needed to aquire it and then decide whether to eat it or not.
Now, if they're saying that a trout's instincts lead it to eat or not to eat, then fine, but I have my doubts as to whether they can really "...do the math" ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif

Too funny........just wait til you see my front yard ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
