About two months ago I took my 11 year old son fishing for bass. I was just sitting back giving advice on his presentation of his flies and just having a great time watch him catch pan fish and every once in awhile a small bass.
After awhile my son said that he could see a big fish coming up the stream. I watched as he put a perfect cast and before I could congradulate him on the cast that big fish hammered that little old fly. And when I mean big I mean BIG. I was in shock as I watch my son play that monster like someone who has been fishing for ages.
My son turned to me and said " That's one ugly and mean looking fish and I am not getting near it." I finally got a good look at the fish and I agree it was one mean looking fish with hundards of teeth just waiting to take my finger off. Having no idea what type of fish it was I quickly took a picture of it and pulled out my measuring stick. It was 47" long. I then cut the leader and watched that monster go away.
I sent the picture to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation for their Big Fish certification. Today we got a certification back and I was able to tell my son that he caught a Longnose Gar.
