Hiwassee River Angling School and Fishing Weekend
June 2 and 3

Saturday, June 2:
Four-hour class with master caster and teacher extraordinaire Wanda Taylor Note: this is not a casting class . Instruction will feature riverside demonstrations on real-life fishing techniques.
Cost: $30 for GaWomFly members; $50 for non-members. Minimum of 7 people; max of 15. RSVP to Susan Abramson sabramson@ajc.com ASAP. Reservations for the class are first-come, first served. Your place is reserved when Susan receives your check.

Additionally, Wanda is offering private lessons after the class for $25 for a half-hour. You must arrange those by emailing her GTaylor815@aol.com .

Sunday, June 3
Practice your new skills on the Hiwassee, which is well-known for its many and varied hatches.

Accommodations: Many options; make your own reservations with Hiwassee Outfitters, Reliance, TN: (800) 338-8133. If several people want to go in together and rent a cabin, we can arrange that, too.

Lodging Options:
Hiwassee Landing cabins: four two-bedroom cabins on river (each room has a queen bed, plus there's a full-sized sleeper futon in living room). $125 a night

Also have older one-bedroom trailer cabins that go for $79 a night. Open-air camping cabins; $45 a night for four bunkbeds. You bring your own pillow and sleeping bag.

Camping: lots of sites; $5 per camper. Hiwassee Outfitters has bathhouses with hot showers, restroom, etc.

Other:
Hiwassee Outfitters offers guide service as well as boat rentals. If you plan to stay and fish, it's worth thinking about hiring a guide so you can fish regardless of the water release schedule.

Guide Service:
Floating: $300 a day for two people; includes lunch. Might be able to work it so that four people split cost and share the day i.e. two in boat with guide in morning, switching out at lunch.

Wading: $200 for two people for five hours.

Also available for rent is a fishing raft, which would accommodate three people (one would have to row). It's more stable than a drift boat and easy to maneuver for anyone with rudimentary boating skills, according to
Michael Smith, who helps manage the shop. It rents for $92 a day.

Hiwassee Outfitters also has a catering service, which could provide means for $5.50 (for grilled burgers, etc.) to up to $20 for steak dinners per person, per meal.

A note about the water release schedule:
There's no way to predict when the TVA will release water from the dam. The best way to fish the river when they are releasing is from a boat; wading can be tricky.
