View Full Version : Chattahoochee Flies Video
The Chattahoochee Flies video is being manufactured as I write after a 6 month production. The DVD version will be released the first week of December. This product was produced by John Gamble and the Upper Chattahoochee TU Chapter. It features an excellent introduction and description of the Chattahoochee River, a visit with Charles Garvin, TU President, a recommendation of productive flies for the Hooch by Brian Richterkessing, Orvis Fishing Manager, and nine "special flies" described and tied on camera by some of the best fly tiers in the State.
The DVD video will sell for $20 and the special flies will be available for purchase if you do not want to tie them. The proceeds from this vedio will go to the Georgia TU Council for the conservation and improvement of the cold water streams in Georgia. The following stores will carry the product: Orvis Buckhead, Orvis Norcross, Flybox Outfitters,Fishhawk and Unicoi Outfitters.
Mack Martin, UCCTU President
The Chattahoochee Flies video went on sale yesterday and I am proud to report that over $3000 dollars in orders and sales transpired on the first day! In one case, at the Fish Hawk, Mack dropped off a dozen copies at the store and within an hour Gary called and asked if he could have some more as he had sold just about all of them! Thanks to everyone for supporting this effort, it is really appreciated.
As a side note, beginning Jan. 4, The Orvis Norcross store will be holding fly tying seminars taught by some of the folks who participated in tying their special flies for the video, teaching their patterns to anyone who is interested in learning them and will continue for 6 staight weeks on Sat. mornings from 10 to 11 am and the best part is that its FREE! You can contact Brian Richterkessing at Orvis for all the details on who is going to be there when and what if anything you need to bring at 770-798-9983.
Once again thanks!
Duane
Are you sure it's free??? I was there the other day and they were telling me about it, but sure did'nt say it was free.. In fact they told me a price but I forget the amount..
Will the video be avaiable on VHS or just DVD?
Thanks
Brent
I`m sitting here looking at the flyer for the events and it says they are free and to my knowledge its only going to be available on DVD.
Duane

Mack and/or Duane,
I spoke with several of the NGTO BODers at the GWFF Xmas party. Since this falls under promoting trout fishing in Georgia, if you ever decide to offer these DVDs by mail you are welcome to use NGTO for that purpose.
There may be many folks that read the message board who are not within a reasonable distance of the flyshops mentioned who might be interested in purchasing these videos.
Whether they want to simply have a video of local patterns being tied or they want to support TU in general or the Upper Chattahoochee chapter specifically, there may be some requests from folks that don't or can't travel to those fly shops. I see skibum appears interested and to be honest I make it to those shops very rarely.
The hardest part would probably be finding somebody that would volunteer to do the mailing. If you can find somebody willing, we will leave the details up to you.
Since you would have to account for mailing charges and the added difficulties of shipping, you may want to add $5 or $10 to the cost. I have no idea what the arrangements are with the flyshops and we surely don't want to step on anybody's toes, so you do what you think is best.
From memory I can name FlygURL, Hoover, Major Wader, Duane, Mark Ducharme, Chris Scally, Sam Rizzio, and Brian Richterkessing as tyers on the video. The last person slips my mind. Several of those are regulars on NGTO.
Hope this helps.

EG, my comments were more about the fly tying class and seminar going on at orvis (check foot in mouth), but yes I will be looking for the DVD here soon. Lucky for me I am close to the Norcross location so it will be easy for me to stop by there. But I like your idea for others who may not be as close as I am to be able to purchase the DVD if they choose.. Cant wait to have a look at it http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
If you don't live near one of the shops, like me. The Fish Hawk can mail you a copy of it. I called them this week and asked if they would be able to mail me a copy and I got it two day's later.
Also, for non DVD owners (like myself) check your computer cd drive to make sure it is not also a DVD player. Thats how I am planning on watching mine.

Whether you realize it or not, you ARE known on this message board as the guy that makes overly dramatic negative inferences and inuendos and goes off on tangents with inflammatory remarks.
I know that in person you're about as truthful a person as there is and I agree with about 95% of what you say. However, nobody else can take credit for your rep on this message board. The credit/blame for your rep on this board lies squarely with your own words. If you want to go off on a bender, create your own thread.
This appears to me to be a thread about a local TU chapter trying to provide some funds for the Georgia State TU Council by producing and selling a DVD about flytying.
Sorry Skibum. I was actually thinking about stickman's comment about mail order.
CBrown, thanks for the suggestion.

The owl seems to get ruffled feathers anytime Trout Unlimited is mentioned in a positive light, and the source of his sore point appears to originate from events related to the announcement of the Gwinnett Treatment Plant. It would appear that he feels Trout Unlimited National should have responded in some major way, and he is unhappy with with what he perceives as a lack of response to his request for assistance.
Allow me to provide some insight. Trout Unlimited's local chapters and the Georgia Council of TU were very much involved and proactive in heading off any discharge which would thermally impact Lanier as a cold water source for the hatchery and tail water. After studying all the facts, and consulting with professional environmental engineers, members met with the EPD and their engineers at the EPD offices to present the concerns of all trout anglers to the EPD. TU recommended to the EPD that any discharge into Lanier be made at a depth where the water temperatures more closely match, and to move that discharge further upstream in the lake to guard against thermal pollution. This is very similar to the final EPD recommendation. As for the National Office of Trout Unlimited, they were kept informed and were ready to provide assistance should the local TU Chapters and Council feel their aid necessary.
Trout Unlimited is respected locally and nationally because they collect all the facts, apply the best science, and propose rational solutions.
Active and involved members of TU were very much aware of our participation through updates provided at chapter and council meetings and in our newsletters. This is the mechanism for the dissemination of information on Trout Unlimited activities. As all the chapters state in their meeting notices, anyone interested in trout fishing is welcome at any meeting.

I have to question though - at what point would "their aid" have been necessary? When the plant decided to pump the waste in the river at the LHA's request???
I can only say that I wish someone had enlightned us all sooner.

It's not my place to mentor here but simply to monitor casting questions...however...
I support TU, FFF, River Keepers, & CCA... They are not perfect but unless I (we) have somthing better to offer I don't think we should knock them. They are only as strong as, we the membership make them.
I believe we need to support those who are joined together and trying to do something positive. In the same light we need to keep this message board positive.
We would have a lot more experience posters here and a lot less lurkers if we could keep the personal opinions, emotions, and BS at bay and keep on subject...fishing!!!
DO I HEAR AN AMEN????

I'm New to this board and don't want to exacerbate this issue. But ,( I know everybody's got one and this is a big one ) isn't part of the purpose of this forum to exchange ideas and opinions? Particularly if those opinions have at least some basis in fact. To give an example: On a different forum a few months back the topic of " THE ROAD " in GSMNP came up. TVA, Sierra Club, T.U., Earth First ,and even Nazis, and some fur flew in those threads. Now, I don't believe getting too emotional, ( Don't call my mother that! ), or BS ing, ( I got this info from a guy who heard it from a guy who heard it etc...) has much place in these discussions. I did learn a lot about the topic and these organizations when posters, either to present their case, or in rebuttal, gave references. Either Weblinks, or reference to print articles and literature. As a result I was able to form my own opinion. And everyone has one of those too! State your case but PLAY NICE! Leave a few in the creek for me!
Owl,
If you want to express your opinions about TU, NGTO, or NGTO BOD, please create another thread somewhere else. As Eg stated:
"This appears to me to be a thread about a local TU chapter trying to provide some funds for the Georgia State TU Council by producing and selling a DVD about flytying."

Eg,
Once again, Thank you for your most generous offer to promote the sale of the DVD`s here, it is much appreciated, but in speaking to the powers that be, it was decided that they will only be sold at the aforementioned shops simply because that they have traditionally supported our efforts to promote our coldwater conservation efforts in this state, and it our hope that folks willing to go to these stores and support them as they are getting no money for doing this(some have also supported NGTO).Iknow this may be an inconvenience for some but we hope you understand.
Thanks,
Duane

I do not (yet) tie flies, but I do fish the Hooch. Will this video be worthwhile for me (Besides the charitable benefits), or is it primarily focused on tying?
thanks.
The dvd consists of an introduction showing the hooch from its humble beginnings to well below the dam, very cool, tying instruction for the local patterns, and a visit to the Orvis Norcross store where Brian will pick out some traditonal patterns for you and offer advice on how to fish them on the river. You can also buy just the flies tied on the video if you don`t tie, and I believe they are only available at the Orvis store locations(Buckhead and Norcross), but I could be wrong about that.Oh` and the dvd is also available at your local TU chapter meetings.
Thanks,
Duane

By the way, went to Orvis Atlanta today and the flies that you can purchase to accompany the DVD are in the store now, just in time for Christmas!
I have to much work occuppying my poor brain http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/frown.gif...I was in Buckhead yesterday and forgot to go by The FishHawk and get my copy of the DVD. Well it sounds like a good excuse to make a trip to the flyshop. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
Duane, would you take a blindfolded guy to a few of those "Hooch fly proving grounds" if I ask nicley? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
Ole Man, if I go, you want me to pick you up a DVD or maybe just meet me at my office for a "lunch meeting" run!?!

I got the DVD the first day it was out. It was worth every penny! Big thanks to the folks who took the effort to put this together.
I haven't seen the production in video format, but in the tape they talk about buying it in either dvd or video.
Now, I've got some tying to do!
JBRR
Greg,
Absolutely Bro! We`ll hit JB or the DH when it clears up.
