what you guys think about the Orvis/Wally World deal? A bunch of guys are discussing how this will hurt the local fly shops but I don't see anybody who actually runs a shop posting so I thought I would ask. Thanks

Good question Yabba. Maybe Jimmy would like to enlighten us on what Unicoi thinks about this topic? Instead of asking other Rod dealers we should instead be asking the shops that deals first hand with the public. Very curious.

I think, for Orvis, it may be a big mistake. Wal-Mart is well-known for making increasing demands on their vendors and I don't think this relationship will be any different. The outfits will still sell for well over $100.00 so I don't think that will open up much of a new customer base. Your local fly shop can already offer a rig in that price range. We decided some years back to not spend too much time fretting over Orvis' corporate decisions and just concentrate on what we do and try to be the best we could possibly be at it. In 1995 Orvis told us they would not open another dealer in north Georgia. Since then they have opened 8 within an hour and a half of our shop. I don't think the Wal-Mart/Orvis deal surprises anyone.

Sounds like good business, good service and great folks.
