Smith's is fishing well, and you're catching the Creek right before the DH Section ends. That's right, the DH ends the 14th of May, and the regular season officialy begins at Sunrise on the 15th of May.
Try Stonefly Nymphs, the simpler the better. I have been having a ton of luck on a very simple Stonefly Nymph, with two biot tails, a brown dubbing body, and a wingcase- that's it! There are a few certain holes, which I will explain to you in a private mode if you wish, that are working exceptionally well for Stonefly Nymph fishermen.
Quoting Jimmy Harris, "Get your flies down where the fish are," (Paraphrased, of course), "is the key in some instances." He has also said "...if you're not dragging the bottom on occasion, your fly isn't deep enough." This is certainly tru right now at Smith's Creek, as well as many other smaller mountain streams. The trout are not neccesarily on the bottom, but have been feeding on the bottom.
There have also been many rises to the Barnett Wite Fly, as well as an Adams and Para-Sulfur. Also try a Parachute-Hare's Ear dry fly down on the "Big Bend". The lower "bend" has been fishing well too (where my mother caught her first trout, a couple of weeks ago).
Fishing near/adjacent to the sewage treatment (?) pond has also been the ticket in some cases, later aftertoon mostly. Fishing larger nymphs up top, with a smaller Pheasant Tail (flashy if possible) on the bottom. More hits on the PT than the Stonefly near the pond.
Have fun, and e-mail me for more specific instructions on certain pools and areas. You may also want to try the holding pool that TU put up a couple of weekends ago. There are some monster browns and rainbows holding in there- keep in kind this is a deep hole, and you're fly needs to 1/2-3/4 down in the water. Fishing dry flies/midges is not what you wanna be doing here. Nymphing with long leaders, and w/o a indicator is best suited for this new spot!
