Will be in Ellijay next week. What would you recommend for short hiking/fishing jaunts?

Try the Noontootla. Sort of SE of Ellijay on public land. Size restrictions apply

The Noontootla is a great suggestion. Plenty of places to hike and fish. If you can find enough time, the Cohutta wilderness is a great place as well. You have the Jacks and the Conasauga Rivers there. The the thread above.
Another great short hike/fish place is the Swinging bridge on the Toccoa River headwaters. The Bridge is a crossing for the Benton-McKaye hiking trail.
