January 31 - Callaway Gardens - 12 noon -

Norman & I decided to ignore the rain, the cold, the 20 mph wind and 6 hours of Super-Bowl pregame shows and go fishing! Planned to float the trout lake, but Norman wanted to wade the edge of Robin (the beach & water-ski lake) as the level way down and we could wade to near drop-off beyond the lifeguard towers where fish often hold. That was a real good idea! If you don't know Callaway, the beach at Robin stretches about a half mile all the way around one end of the big lake. We began catching fish almost immediately. By 6 o'clock when we quit, the b****tally was somewhere around 75, with numerous big bluegill thrown in. It was ridiculous - we're thigh deep in water off the sand beach, rain pouring, wind howling and whipping whitecaps, and we're looking back-and-forth at each other and giggling like kids as we released yet another fish. The fish were taking soft; and with sink-tip lines it was hard to detect the strike , as the wind pushed slack into the floating section of line. We got the hang of it, but intermediate full-sinks would have been better (better?!!?!). Most of the fish were hooked on a rattle clouser, a small deceiver and big sparkle woolies. Some of the b****were in less than 4' of water. What a strange day - don't know if it was the blue moon, warm weather in past weeks, or just the b****wanting to munch a bit before the game. Whatever - I've got a guide trip set for Tuesday morning and I sure hope this guy doesn't wanna trout fish!

Kent,
That's impressive! I would have even left the spinning rod at home to get in on some of that action.
In case your wondering about the answering machine message: I had a late cancellation on friday, and I called you looking for a partner for saturday, but you were out.
Except for a few intermitent periods of drizzle, it absolutly poured on saturday. In fact, I had to keep the bilge pump running to keep the boat afloat. One interesting incident though made it all worth it. There was no generation, and we were throwing baits into one of the shallow plunge pools right behind the dam, when I got a hit and a big head shake. The water was real shallow, and I could see the fishes back as it manuvered out of the pool, hit a chute, and made a break for the open water. With twelve pound test, there wasn't much I could do, but set the drag and try to keep the fish out of the rocks and in the main channel. After several minutes, the drag started to wear the fish down, and I finally landed a 14lb striper. I have no idea what a fish that big was doing up in that skinny water. It couldn't manuver to feed, and it wasn't stranded.
I went back to the pool again tossed in the bait, and connected with a 5lb bass.
The strange part of the whole scenerio occured when I was taking the b****off the hook. Here comes the 14lb striper swimming back up the chute and into the plunge pool again.
He didn't want to mix it up a second time though.
Anyway, we ended up with 11 fish that weighed 74 lbs.

Wish I'd got that message in time! `Know that striper was a hoot! We considered going down to the "wall" on Sunday (as there was no generation then either), but opted for Callaway instead. But call me again - for the "wall" or when you're ready to take that Sage to Callaway.

That 14 lb striper story was too much - guess where I was this afternoon?

Carter Nelson & I had planned to fish (and were) a little private lake in Pine Mountain and I told him your story. As we'd caught only a few fish, we decided to head for the Hooch. Waded the shoals just as water was going down after this morning's generation. Very muddy & tough to wade, but we wound up with 3 good hybrid. But I still want that striper!

Anyhow, thanks for the tip. Glad to know the fish are back on as last coupla times I've been it was slow.
