Fellow Fishheads,

I had planned to float the Hooch this afternoon but canceled out due to the water conditions (thanks Hoochcam.)

The family and I are headed to the Keys next month and I plan on fishing the flats with Little Drifter. So today I put some new line on the 7wt outfit along with a braided butt and leader. Couldn't resist so I tied on a "Kent's Clouser." Homer the Trout Dog led the way as we walked down to the pond in front of my house. The water was crystal clear. The sun was shining and there was a stiff breeze. The 7wt threw well with the new line. I practiced my double-haul as demonstrated by Lefty at the Spend-Some-Dollars Expo.

After a couple of casts, I had on my first green trout. I caught about 10 in a half hour. All on Kent's Clouser. As I played one bass, a channel cat came up to the b****and tried to inhale it. The catfish weighed about 5 lbs (I feed them protein pellets). I didn't hook him but I pulled him about 10 feet before he realized what was going on. He finally let go as Homer the Trout Dog started barking.

Caught a few more b****before catching the largest crappie of my life. He was well over a pound and a half (fat belly--looked to be spawning.)

All in all, a good afternoon fishing. The fish quit hitting as the sun got lower. Guess I'll hafta go to the Fishhawk tomorrow to get some dyed bucktail and lead eyes and begin tying the "Kent's Clouser."

Ole Man--I'm gonna tie some of your Deceivers also. I think the barracuda will love 'em.

Drifter,
The white b****and hybrid still have not moved up to Franklin. These colder temperatures that we've been experiencing have held the runs back. It looks like the next full moon is when everything is going to happen.

Hook,

Thanks for letting me know. I've been busy lately and haven't had much time to fish. I get that sick feeling in my stomach everytime I see a boat headed west on 34....thinking I have missed the White b****spawn.

You've made me feel better! If I see, hear, or smell anything, I'll let ya' know.

`Glad the clouser worked for you. I can take not credit, however - fly's been out there catching a lot of fish for number of years. I'm constantly amazed that more people don't fish it.

It'll slay those white b****& hybrid, too.

Re Franklin, we went up last Sunday just to scout the put-in & river as I've never launched that far up. Of course, we had to get in & cast a little. DNR guy came down to check our license - said he'd been in Franklin about 3 years and that was 1st time he'd seen fly rods there. Also said they were catching only a few whites & wipers - so Hooker is on the money (as we knew he would be - he is the Hooker!).

Kent,

I talked to Carter Nelson at the Fishhawk today. He seems to be very knowledgeable with regards to warmwater fly fishing. I didn't realize we so many talented warmwater flyfishers down our way.

I even found out that Hooker has recently bought some tying material to tie ba$$ flies. Say it ain't so! I guess he's gonna tie up some of those Rattle Trap Flies http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif

Carter definitely knows his biz - warm, cold & salt. If you look at the name on the articles in many of those ff magazines, you'll see it's his.

Hooker will tye a fly, tho he likes to keep it quiet. About the second time I fished with him for hybrid/stripers he brought me one to use. He said, "...you gotta throw something that has a big profile." Using only an 8 wt, it was pretty hard to get the thing moving - but it did work. And one day up on the Hooch, he said he was thinking about a new fly rod so I let him throw my Sage. When he made the first cast, I knew he had thrown a fly rod before - smooth motion & good timing, no hint of exertion. I think he throws the fly a lot when nobody's watching. A closet flyfisherman! Come out, Hooker!

BTW, it may be time to head west out 34. I'm gonna be in Pennsylvania the weekend, or else I'd be there.

All right, you guys got me.
I'm using the flyrod more and more, and each time I do, I get a little more into it. I even have two flyrods now, my 4wt Sage for trout, and an 8wt that I'm using for striper, hybrid.
Drifter, have a great time in the keys, and Kent, I'll see you next week.
