Hey can you answer this or point me in the direction to find this answer.
I just purchased a little Marlin .22 I would love to head up into the mountains and site it in etc..
IS it true that you can target practice within the WMA's? Is there particular areas you can fire a weapon et>?
I just do not feel like going to a gun range to plink around. Much rather do it in prettier surroundings.

You are not allowed to posses a weapon, much less a loaded one on any WMA, except during gun hunts, and then under strict regulations. People do take weapons on WMAs and shoot them, albeit illegally. I was bow hunting last season on Blue Ridge WMA when I heard someone start shooting what sounded a SKS not far from camp. You are not even supposed to have a loaded weapon anywhere on a WMA except in your hunting stand during gun hunts.

Some WMAs do have shooting ranges on them, and most are fairly well equipped with hours and rules posted. Bill can probably supply a list of WMAs in N GA with ranges, or the hunting regulations may still have them listed. Some ranges are archery only, and some of them are firearm only. Make sure that the range you plan to go to is open before you go. Do not fire anywhere except on a range. The only range I've ever seen is the one at West Point WMA. I went there just to get a map and talk to the ranger, it's right next to the check station and it is a very nice range with a covered bench area.

J Olliff is correct. WMAs are used for a number of purposes beside hunting. Hikers, anglers and others. The closest WMA rifle range to the hatchery is Wilson Shoals, about 1 hour north on I985/Ga 365 near Alto Ga. Directions are in the hunting regulations.
