Bill-
How are the DO levels holding up this late summer below the dam?

Here is Bill's reply. If you want to fish below the dam in the near future, better do it quick.
Dissolved Oxygen at the dam is below 4.0 ppm. I am stocking until the
D.0 falls below 3.5 ppm. I suspect that last week was the last
stocking, but I'm going to let the D.O. meter tell us for sure.

I E-mailed Bill, and here is the reply I got:
"D.O. is below 4.0 ppm
and falling. We have stocked through last week, but will probably stop
soon. I didn't tell Dave, but for reference D.O. at 53F is saturated at
about 10 ppp. This is cyclic falling from stratification (April) through
turnover (late December or early January). D.O. can get as low as 0.5
ppm, and as high as 11 ppm. The Corps is working on adding auto-venting
turbines to increase the minimum river D.O."

From Bill:

The lake will turnover (destratify) in late December or early January.
When this happens D.O.s go from below 5ppm to more than 10ppm.

From Bill:

Ideal Dissolved Oxygen D.O. is probably saturation, it is also more than
necessary. Fish culturist aim for 60% of saturation. Below 60% growth
rates begins to decline. The ammount of oxygen that water can hold
changes with temperature, altitude, salinity and a few other
factors with minor influences. Salinity is not a factor in freshwater,
so temperature and altitude drive the solubility of oxygen in the
Chattahoochee. The higher the temp. the less oxgyen water can hold. In
the Chattahoochee River 60% of saturation will be approximately 6ppm.
Hope this helps.
