View Full Version : Island Ford
So I'm going to venture South of familar waters tommorrow to Island Ford. My first time down there and I was wondering if anyone out there can give me some info. Just want to know where the best areas to wade are and does it fish the same as Jones Bridge or near the dam. Basically any secrets you can give me would be great. Thanks in advance!

Tait,
I would fish the side of the island that river road parrallel's. If you come in at the bottom of the island, look for bwo hatches here in the winter into early spring.
Moving up the left hand side of the island, it will be somewhat flatter water, with one rock in the middle forming a current. Nice fish live below this rock, but you got to get down to them,
Above the rock, it shallows up a bit. ON the left bank is a great cut ( where the current moves thru) in this cut you can swing wets ( a la rod) or nymphs drifter thru, or even strip buggers. This is also a stocking area, so holds fish a majority of the time.
Next up from here you will see tree jutting in from the left into the river. Small pocket behind it that is worth a throw or two.
Next your half way up the island and coming up to what appears to be a shoals area. Cross over to river left now, and work that deep run on your right with deep buggers, dries if you see activity, and prince nymphs.
Next is the shoals. this whole are is somewhat shallow but holds lots of fish. Use a beadhead with only a micro shot or no shot, and hit the rapids. Browns in here mostly with a couple bows thrown in.
Also, the far left bank is really good, and there is one deep cut over there that is usually good for one or two.
above this shoals it stays shallow (mostly thigh deep at deepest and I am 6-01). Now the run in front of the overhangng porch is good, but gets pounded. Experience is that river left usually produces better. Up from here you want to hit below the overturn row boat on the left hand side, and then there is one pool on river left that is a money hole, but you gotta find that one on your own..he he he.
Hopes this helps.

jeffg,
Is there any parking along river road at island ford. I drove this stretch once and it looked like all private property.

Do like I do Golden. Park under 400 bridge in the little park and put your gear on and grab your float tube and hitchhike all the way up river. I always have a truck pick me up within a few minutes. Some of my rides are regulars from over the years stopping for me. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gifParking on the side of the road will end up getting your vehicle towed. I hope you have a float tube its a long walk back wading down river.
