I am planning a trip to New Zealand in about two months and plan on putting some serious casting practice in beforehand. I've been told that I won't need to generally cast mroe than 40 feet and will be using 14 foot leaders. Plus, accuracy will be VERY important as most will be sight-fishing. Anyone have good advice on practice techniques, either on or off the water?...thanks...AR.

Wow! New Zeland! I read a book called Master the Cast that really helped me out with my casting. I can't remember who the author was but it was in the Gwinnett County Library. Have Fun!

Put some frisbees or like size targets out on your lawn around you in a circle at different distances and practice casting to them. This will greatly help your accuracy. Try to make as little false casts as possible at the targets which will help in spooking less fish. Have fun on your trip. Keep us updated on your practing and let us know if we can help you further.

You should practice with the rod you'll be using, the long leader you think you'll be using and a fly with the bend and hook cut off. Keep moving the targets so you don't get accustom to them or better yet I just walk around and use leaves this time of year. If most of your fish will be at 40' or less then make sure you can cast 60' to compensate for wind, nerves, and to be really good at 40'
