I have been practicing for several days to form tighter loops when doing a roll cast. You could walk an elephant thru my current loops. Maybe once out of 15 tries the loop forms correctly. Is there is trick to making the rod load properly.

It's a lot easier to show this than to explain, but here's a hint - tight loops on a roll are formed just like they are formed on a regular cast.

Jeff,

The same principles apply as we looked at in the overhead cast during your private lesson.

Most important to remember in the roll cast is the straight line path of the rod tip. Think about what direction the rod tip is unloading in after the stop.

Thanks Kent and Scott. By the way, fly casting is easy, I am finding that casting well is not at all.
