Without going into crazy detail, think about how you may apply power in your normal casting
stroke without a double haul. If you want, you may use gradual acceleration, or, you can
delay the power well forward, and combine a wrist turn over and sudden power application.
There are shades of power application between these styles, and similarlay, the double
haul power application may range also. The length of haul, timing of haul, and speed and force
used in haul, are all variables that can be studied, but become intuitive. Additional variables are
rod to line balance, line diameter, wind, altitude, weight and air resistance of fly. The "best" double haul
is a moving target just like the normal casting stroke. You can say stuff like, start the haul when you start
your forward stroke. Or, you can say delay the haul until you feel the rod starting to load just a little, then haul.
Both can be correct. It is a matter of style, but the main thing to look out for is that the haul is not
a cause for tailing loop, because of premature power application causing the tip to drop under the
straight line path...... My own suggestion is the haul is balanced to distance being cast, short stroke
for short cast, then use a short haul. Long cast, long stroke, and a longer haul.
