I have an Acer Veriton purchased a year or two ago that came preloaded with Win 98. Last summer I updated to Win XP. I had a few driver issues but was able to resolve any problems I had. In Jan my computer was infected with a blaster worm. After spending hours and hours with people in India, Nova Scotia, Alberta, http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/frown.gif I am still having problems. Under the error log I get the following message:
AMLI: Acpi Bios is attempting to read from and illegal address (0x71) which lies in the 0x70 - 0x71 protected address range. Please contact your system vendor.
The monitor is a KDS which was added on last summer also. Norton System Works is also installed.
I reinstalled the ghost recovery disk which came with the computer then updated to Windows XP. Initially I had tried to do a clean install of XP but Had a lot of problems. I believe I have also updated any service packs from MS.
Thanks Hep
Jeff

uh...you can't get there from here.
I think your best bet is to try a clean install. What is your computer not doing? I mean will it run fine but keep givingyou the error in the log or will it just nto work at all? If it works, you may want to use norton system works to help look up patches or try looking up the balster virus. You may have missed a patch. Thee is also the possiblity that the error is not related. There are several sites that will allow you to look up the error code.
I searched your error code on google and it comes up to a BIOS issue. Visit the manufactures homepage and see if the offer a BIOS upgrade.

Thanks ST, Initially we did a clean install, (myself and a very nice young lady working nights in New Delhi (sp)). After having multiple problems (acer sets their CD-Rom at the factory, I used the recovery disk, and installed 98. No Problems at all. After updating to xp, I had mouse, monitor, and browser issues. Everything is working fine right now, except the system just sometimes crashes( and its gonna burn http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif) if I dont get this fixed every 10 15 minutes or less. I have just installed AOL 9.0 after reading 7.0 was incompat with xp.
The power management,(hibernation) seems to be an issue. I just dont get why it worked fine before. Can a blaster worm/ virus change the bios.
Thanks again ST

I guess you have tried updating windows via the update site adn installed all critical patches. Power management features such being able to have yoru PC sleep cuases trouble with some PC's. The error sounds like a device is trying to access a memory range the OS uses. Can you trace the prob back to the monitor or an install of a driver update? I have not heard of a worm messing with bios, worms are tended to cause network havic not individual pc chaos.
I bet acer offers a new version bios. Try that route.

ST, thank you so much for the info and your time, its too soon to tell, maybe I will have to start over, but I removed the NTI cd maker and so far, 30 minutes and counting I have not crashed.

Let me know if you are still having problems resulting from the Blaster worm (ie computer kicks you off the internet and shuts down) or if the problem is related to the recent installs. I had to tackle this **** virus after my parents' computer got it and I have a few tricks. Too long to write. I'd have to walk you through them.

Doesn't XP require a ton more ram than 98?
Could that be a problem?
Just a shot in the dark.

I found a free blaster worm removal tool on the web. Worked great. I think I did a Google search to find it.

yes win xp requires a TON more ram. it also has the ntts filing system. I would dare say that if it came preloaded with windows 98 that moving up to xp was probably not a great idea. I would try going back to windows 98 after running something like an ez drive program that simply wipes your drive clean and go from there. It might be a good idea just to reformat and start over. Just burn off anything you want to save if you can.

2000 and XP both require 128 megs or memory minimum to run. You can run with less but the performance is less than adequate. I reccomend 320 megs at least especially if you have a nice video card or a DVD or CD burner.
2000 and XP both have the option to run on a FAT32 or NTFS file ssytem. NTFS is recommended for 2000 and XP and it is a more secure file structure especially if you are on a network.
XP is also a very unstable OS. Lots of vulnerabilities and security risks. 2000 is this way also but not as bad. I liked 98 but ME was crap. I have 2000 professional now and it works. I keep threatining to switch to a Mac or Linux but I am just too lazy and I spend all my money on FF'ing.

If you havn't already got it, Get a copy of Norton Systemworks, and Norton Firewall.
I think these are a must have with XP. The XP format is really prone to viruses and other infections. Norton will stop many and their online service will supply virus removers. I had the blaster worm and they have a free tool to kill it. But first you have to identify the exact virus you have. Norton will do this then go to thier tools and download one.

Ok, this is my third attempt today to answer all the help everyone has added. Thanks again, I am amazed at the complexity involved in making all these devices work. My hat off to all of you in IT>
Anyhow MBA, from another MBA http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif(are ya for or against NAFTA? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gifStaying up late I see, I remember those days, thanks for the offer. I downloaded the repair tool from MS and then installed the service pack to repair XP. Is there more I could do? We (MS and I on the phone) reformatted the hard drive then reinstalled XP, realized I had the virus, then added the patch. When things did not work properly, I used the recovery disk (98) then updated to XP.
Earlier last year I updated from 98 to XP and things worked fine after downloading the service pack and changing the mouse driver. Why I am having problems now I dont have a clue.
To JJ and MM: I only have 128 of ram, and maybe thats part of the problem, its a start anyhow. Why I picked XP I dont remember, it was for my 17 year old daughter and some school projects she was working on. I would not recommend it.
MMarkey: I have and have had Norton up and running and somehow still got the virus. I am not sure my updates were or still are updating correctly. Each time I run disk dr 20 30 errors are found in the registry after restarting the computer.
Additionally, when I start windows in the command prompt mode, it locks up at the c: windows/system32/drivers/mup. Do you know what that is associated with?
Thanks I am sending this while Ican
Yeah, mid-terms. OK, I'm back in action. It sounds like your problems are more associated with the upgrade than the virus at this point. I have found that the supposed "clean" upgrade is never clean. I too did an upgrade from 98 to XP for my parents only to find out after I left that they had the worm all along. Blaster attacks the NTFS filing system so that's why you probably didn't notice you had it until the upgrade. To fix your current problem, make sure you go to Acer's web site and see if they have updates for the BIOS of your computer model. This can really help with performance if the configs are not set for the correct operating system. Let me know if that helps or if you think your problems are still related to the worm.
Thx,
GB
