Redneck Fans

We had an interesting thread going on the Tech Board concerning which school had the most 'neck fans. Here's one of the posts from the thread:

"Redneck is a really ambiguous term. However, i'm assuming you mean the white trash definition of redneck, so here goes my list:

1) BAMA: whoever said most of the 'necks in Alabama drift toward Auburn is dead wrong. Bama has a much bigger following in the state based on my experience, and a bigger following in a southern state equates to more white trash bandwagon fans.

2) TENNESSEE: I lived in Athens for 6 years. Whenever UT fans came down it made UGA folks seem classy. Any fan base that can do that is in a league of its own.

3) LSU: Not as white-trashy as Bama or UT, but probably more classless overall.

4) GEORGIA: Biggest bandwagon school in the South for surprisingly very little reason. Extremely high concentration of trailer park ilk due to the only other in-state school with a major sports program being Tech.

5) FLORIDA: As classless and toothless as Georgia, but they actually can point to on-the-field-accomplishments to back up their ignorant arrogance.

Now, there are way too many good folks I know who are fans of all these schools, so I hope they don't think i'm trashing them. Success=redneck fans, believe it or not. For better or worse, I have seen the 'neck quotient at Tech games since '97 increase dramatically. But hey, these folks buy tickets and even wear gold so I have no problem with the disadvantages of success.

Let's remember that Bear Bryant was forced to wear a helmet at Grant Field because good Tech fans would throw bottles."

We all went through this discussion during football season. And, as someone who has visited just about every football stadium in the southeast (for over 40 years), there is no doubt that Bama holds the title for the largest populations of necks, trailer trash, mullets, whatever...
Heck, even the local police in Tuscaloosa commented in the newspapers about how the student body are all "trailer trash."
I'll put Tenn in second behind Bammer, with LSU fans as being the most obnoxious. But football in Dixie is still the best! Just ask
a visitor from another part of the country who attends a campus game in the South, and they will tell you that it's a "religious experience."
I love the smell of southern tailgating on a football Saturday in the Fall. Athens, Oxford, Auburn, Knoxville, Baton Rouge, Tuscaloosa, Gainesville...etc... are great places for football.

As a nearly lifelong resident of the State of Alabama, I never knew people outside this state thought Auburn was the redneck school here. I knew they thought Auburn was one redneck school (for no other reason I have heard cited than the existence of an Ag school), but figured everyone knew UAT was the redneck school of the state.

I totally agree about the bandwagon jumpers too. That's where your rednecks come in. I can think of very few actual alumni or students of any SEC school that I would consider rednecks. Along those lines, I would have to admit that since the death of the Bear and the superior performance Auburn's football team has shown over theirs since then (only marginally superior, but superior nonetheless), I see lots more orange and blue attire on people who make me wish they wouldn't wear it. When I first became an Auburn fan, no one in this state pulled for Auburn other than alumni, students and their families. I still think most of the redneck bandwagon jumpers are oriented to the west side of the state, but Auburn gets a few of those people now too.

Man- you guys have really got me looking forward to football season(particularly after watching the Braves for the last week). I would have to say that UT has the most redneck of the fan base, with Florida and LSU in a tie for the most annoying.

oh come on the most redneck fans in the world are god forsaken TEXAS fans. Followed closely by oklahoma. although LSU are the most rude and obnoxious. UGA are the most worthless fans ... they sit on their hands so they are ....... ,,worthless i tell you. and what have they realllllly done ...... honestly about as much as texas.
