I am headed to Port St Joe, Fl this weekend. I have never used my 6 wt in salt water. What size leader and tippet should I use? Any fly suggestions for reds & trout? Any info would be appreciated.

A six weight is awfully light for the salt. Stick with leader under 10lb. rating. I.e. bonfish 8.8lb. or 10lb. or 2x-3x freshwater. The light line is tuff in the wind, so take advantage of morning fishing off the beach(the surf is usually down in the a.m. also). Chances are you'll be cathcing Whiting, Ladyfish and Croakers. If you loose a fly or two to these critters, use a small steel leader. General baifish imitators are best clousers, deceivers, rattle-rousers, and gummy minnows. If you have access to the the flats, then you'll get into the reds and specks. White and Chartreuse-white baitfish are good for specks, as are yellows and lt. blues. The Redfish love bait immitators in golds, coppers, olives, rootbeers reds, chartreuse, etc.(real rich colors). Crab patters are also popular. The problem with these flies is with alot of weight, they become difficult to cast very far with a light rod. Good luck! -Rob
