Friend purchased a Winston JWF 5wt. down there Sat. and the down locking seat requires a reel with a short slim foot. CFO fits poorly, Ari Hart foot fits nicely, Bauer and Lamson to large. Any help would be appreciated.

Depends on what you are looking for. The Ross Rhythm is a great little reel as are the Galvans. I believe their feet are slim enough to fit the Winston DL seat.

Lightweight (female owner), premium reel, disc drag, that most importantly fits properly.
Thanks for the quick reply.

As James said, I would look very hard at the Galvans. Great drag system. :)
You were correct Tom, definitely up.

I'm pretty sure he intended that to be thumbs up on the Galvan... I happen to know that Russ thinks very highly of them. I bought one on his recommendation and I love mine!

If she wants to go click drag--the Abel TR trout reels are being discontinued by Abel. They should be on sale. According to the Abel catalog I recently received, the TR1 is $165, TR2 $175, TR3 $185, TR/Light $155.

I go with ole man on this one. I have had an Abel TR for years and love it. One of the finest machined reels on the market and they are discontinuing them. Should get a great price. You might check with Murrays Fly Shop and see if they are discounting them yet.

We can get the TRs as long as they last. It is a beautiful reel, however it is a non-adjustable click drag. You can tweak it with some tools. With so many mid-priced disc drag reels out there, the TRs aren't selling for Abel anymore. I'd be looking for a re-tool for '06. -Rob

Anyone hanging a Galvan on a down locking Winston seat?
What Galvans are you using?
OM, definitely going to hang one of those TRs on my Christmas 3wt. Thanks!

I have a Galvan Torque T-5. It's very nice. I looked at comparably priced Ross, Lamson (I have a Litespeed), and Bauer reels. To me they are all equals it really comes down to personal preference. I had a recommendation on the Galvan and have never regretted the choice. I would love to have one of their open backs for my small stream rod. That's the model I'd go with for the Winston. It comes in sort of a Winston Green as well.

All my Winstons with d/l seats are older IM-6's, but they all take a Battenkill Disc or Bar Stock reel with no problems. Not exactly in a class with the Galyans, etc., but they hold the line and the drag works OK for trout fishing with a 5wt..
Tell your friend to hold on to the JWF with the downlocker, I've heard that Winston won't be putting them on any rods now unless you special order and pay a $50 upcharge. Wish I'd thought to get a d/l on the last one I ordered.....
Winstons ROCK!!!
