Owl, you forgot "sticky" in describing Cortland 555! In the inaugeral S.E regional FF masters tournament, all casters were required to use Cortland 444 line, and the feel was just not there! If the 555 is a son of 444,............. Its a lousy fling @ any distances over 60 ft. This last years event used SA #5 GPX WF, and It is a far superior line whether shooting for a target, or working a stream! I,ll add my 2 cents to yours toward buying a GOOD line! Welcome back to the board!....Rocketroy of Clarkesville P.S. Bring your leadership qualities to the Fling, and help me with the casting event, as well as signing up! A dozen or so flys, from you to go in the boxes I supply, would be nice for the NGTO crowd to win! See Ya!
I have the ghost tip WF4F line, used twice, and have to agree with the previous two posts. At first I thought it was just the cold weather making it kink up but after a lot of stretching and trying it again in warmer weather it did not get much better.

I have a 555 floating line and I would have to say that the kinking and curling are always present. Stretching it seems to help some but who wants to take the time to stretch it every time u fish with it. The bass pro conservationist line is better than this stuff, which is supposed to be the same as SA GPX.

444 and Orvis Hy Float/Silver Label used to be good inexpensive line until they "improved" them. 555 won't even hold a nail knot, what good is a super slick coating if it's in tight coils? I don't know, just don't get it. :)

I must be the only one around that likes my 555. The only time I've had trouble with coiling was during EXTREMELY cold weather. Otherwise its been great - slick and floats like a cork. I will admit though that I like the SA GPX a bit better.

Yall may not believe this (and i certanly dont believe everything that i hear), but an orvis rep told me that SA makes their wonderline for them and that it is identical to GPX. A fly shop also told me that but that my just be an orvis ploy. i dont think that the new wonderlines that bad imo.

I heard that SA makes the line to Orvis specs and Orvis adds their own slick coating. Different from the AST coating on SA Mastery series? I don't know... wish I was fishing today.... instead of studying....

Don’t believe everything a fly shop tells you when asking about a product they DON’T carry.
I’ve heard the same song and dance you did about Orvis as well as the ‘fact’ that Loomis rods have no warranty... from non-Loomis and Orvis dealers of course!
>>Wonderline Advantage features a reformulated super slick outer coat, the result of an exclusive post-production manufacturing process done at the Orvis factory in Manchester, Vermont. A specially designed machine applies the unique coating to the fly line, ensuring that it penetrates deep into the line for long life<<

555 works the best if you leave it in a drawer at the house, just like mine!

SA does make lines for quite a few other companies, including Orvis and Bass Pro Shops. However, none of them have the AST coating. While Orvis may put their own coating on it, it was still made by SA. The different coatings can and frequently do drastically change the characteristics of the line.

What are you looking for? I have a few sad and lonely lines that are looking for a new home, for a very reasonable fee.

Owl/Reviveourhomes, Et. Al. Since there seems to be agreement, that many of these lines have been retired to "The Drawer" Only a suggestion: is to bring them to the Fling, mark fot sale,.......or allow me to offer your contribution to the $ 1:00 per cast event.......with all $$$$$$$ going to the NGTO treasury! All targets will be @ short enough distances for anyone to win{ 25-45 ft.}, and Loaner rods and yarn flys will be provided, as well as plenty of accomplish casters advise! YMMV....... Regards, Rocketroy of Clarkesville P.S. Reviveourhomes: your assignment if you choose to accept:"Bring a winning attitude and a fistful of $$$$$$$$!"

I will be there rocket, not with a lot of cash :indif: , but with a winning attitude for sure. Which will be kinda hard for me to win considering Ive owned a fly rod for about 2 weeks. LOL :D

This might be a good time to mention for the newer folks.....
1. Fly casting requires practice; usually in your yard, and definately NOT while fishing.
2. Grass is hard on fly lines, believe it or not.
3. No matter your skill level, you'll enjoy fishing a good quality line.
4. having a spare line means you can use it in your yard without trashing your more expensive line.

Ditto, Jackster.......the above title says it all! BTY,the Barrett TV production site confirms there will not be a 2005 event.......guess they are seeking new sponsors, for 2006. Sooooooooo, we need to develop some new casting talent locally........we have a year to jig it up! Rocketroy For the last two years, N.C. has provided the Regional winners........not good!
