I want to invest in the C&F Design Box, should I go with a waterproof model or not? I like the idea of the slits to hold the hook, has anyone had problems with these boxes?

Thanks!

No problems. I've had one for a few years now and absolutely love it. I have the center card for my streamers.

As with any post regarding fly boxes, remember to put your name, phone number/email address in your fly box - a permanent marker works well - so that when you lose your fly box, it can be returned to you, if found.

I recently bought 6 C&F boxes for my flies from ezyflyfish.com They had a big sale going on, and it was a great deal.

I don't know whether they are completley waterproof or not, but I sure like them. They will hold a boatload of flies and the little slits are sweet, escpecially if you have not removed the barbs from your hooks. I've tried at least a dozen different boxes, and so far, I like these the best for my dry flies and nymphs. Still lean towards a plastic box with big bins for large streamers and boogers.

Here's a link for the options available, (http://www.worleybuggerflyco.com/flyboxes/C_&_F_Fly_Filing_System.htm) although I recommend purchasing at your local fly shop.

Get the waterproof boxes. They float and will keep your flies dry if you're deep wading and have them in a low front pocket of a vest. Flies will be less likely to rust if you're able to keep 'um dry in the box.

It depends on what you want. I've got both, and I love both. The WP boxes are bigger and tougher than the ones that aren't WP, which means they are heavier and take up more space in your vest. Of course, they are also more durable and hold more flies. The non-WP boxes are lighter, less expensive, and easier to carry. You just need to decide which qualities are more important to you.

As for the waterproof aspect itself, I don't think it really matters. I've had no problems with flies rusting in my non-WP boxes, and they float long enough to catch up with them if they are dropped.

Like GH, I have both. I tend to use the non-waterproof ones more, as they are lighter and smaller. I've gone to using a lanyard and keeping a box or two in shirt pockets for most of my fishing, and the smaller ones work better for that. I also use the System boxes that have the interchangable inserts. These allow more flexibility as far as stocking the boxes, and I can mix and match depending on the water I'm fishing.

My wife and I both use the CF1506F. This is a non waterproof box with center leaf. Dang thing holds over 550 flies and is great for dries and nymphs normally carried for WNC streams. Looked at water proof boxes and didn't see the need for the extra size and weight. We always leave our boxes open when we quit for the day at least over night. If any water did get in, have not had a problem with rust so far. You're right - at that price they are an investment but well worth it. Once the fly is between the micro slits, it will not fall out. Period.

That's good design and is worth the "investment", in my opinion.

My $.02.
