I'm looking to purchase my 1st pair of lightweights since my neoprenes are too warm and my $39 rubber hip waders are not cutting it. With all the choices out there I'd sure appreciate any advice. Mainly...
1) Advantage/disadvantage between boot foot and stocking foot.
2) Same concerning cleat vs. felt vs. studded felt.
I'd like to get something versatile to allow for a variety of conditions both in-stream and out. Looking at my Orvis catalog makes me hope I don't have to spend hundreds of $$ to get a decent pair.
Thanks to anyone who might offer some insight!

Lets see- boot vs. stocking foot. Stockingfoot is better because
You can replace just the boot if needed, if the boot wears out
You don't need a second pair of boots for wet wading
Felt soles are a whole lot better than lug soles, lug soles will slip on rocks. But if you hike in to your favorite creek, lug soles are safer on wet ground.
Haven't used studded soles, so I will defer to others opinions
For me and most others, stockingfoot breathable waders and felt soled wading boots are pretty much the standard
Ditto the reasoning on stockingfoot over bootfoot and concerning the choice of felt soled boots also.
In my limited experience I have found felt soles to be much better than rubber or lug soles. I also like a few studs for use in some of the slicker streams, along with the felt. Many folks have the Chota STL's which are felt sole, but come with screw in studs. I have ansd use these most of the time. I also bought a pair of Korker's Konvertible. They tend to run a size small, thus you want to be sure to try on any boots you may be interested in, using some think socks and maybe even carrying along your waders. The Korkers allow you to switch from one type of sole to another in a few minutes time. My pair came with a set of felt soles and a set of hiking soles. I later bought a pair of felt soles with studs in place.
Hope this helps,
Mike

I agree. I have always worn stocking foot. Because mine are so comfortable I probably always will! I have a pair of LL bean boots that are rubber soled for hiking in yet have incredible grip ... not quite like felt but great on land. As for waders, get the most breathable pair you can afford.

i say wet wade ... you can handle it ...... especially in the summer :D
Have you ever tried to wet wade the hootch near the dam even during the summer? I did at Settles Bridge and it inspired me to but waders in the first place.
