Told you I'd be bombarding you with questions :) Anyways, getting started and this is probably a dumb one. I have a Pac Bay A5 uplocking reel seat. The insert is wood and there is the threaded bottom and end cap and the uplocking hood. The hood will not be fitted inside the cork handle. My question is this: Does one just take rod building epoxy and glue the threaded portion, the end cap and the upper hood to the wood part????? Told you this was a dumb question.
Thanks in advance,
bd

Yep--just glued together. Any excess that squeezes out you can wipe off with rubbing alcohol (while fresh--before it dries). What you have to watch out for with the hood is to not let excess epoxy get into the hood pocket where the reel foot will sit. If you get epoxy in there, the reel foot prob won't go in. So--when you put some epoxy on the wood to glue the hood to the wood---only put it on the side opposite the pocket not all the way around the diameter of the wood. It is a good idea to sit the rod down on the butt cap or tape it down to the threaded barrel after glueing. Sometimes the expoxy gases will build up inside and partially push the butt cap out. If you want to bury the hood in the cork and the cork is not inletted to receive the hood---you can place the metal hood centered up against the cork and trace the outline of the hood/pocket onto the cork end. Then take an exacto knife and some small files, a Dremel if you have it, and carve out the cork to receive the hood. Back in the 80's when inletted cork handles generally were not available this is how it was done. Orvis even had this procedeure with drawings printed in their catalog back then.

Thanks, ole man. I think I've got it now. Epoxied the reel seat together, spined the rod, wrapped tape bands around the butt to accept the seat, put the rod wrapper together, prepped the guides, ordered another tip-top cuz there was not one in the kit, measured where the guides go and practiced wrapping on a wooden dowel. Today was productive and I think I'll at least be able to make a usable rod :)
Thanks and I'm sure there will be more questions along the way,
bd
PS, still need to figure out how to use the rod drying motor but that's a ways off :)

Lol, maybe on the pix, mmarkey. I wrapped the hook keeper and stripping guide this morning. We'll see how it turns out :) By the way, if anybody out there uses a Cabela's rod drying motor, I'd love to have a chat with you about how to use the darned thing. I think there may be a part missing but I ain't sure :(

Windknot, you got it, that's what I ain't got. I ordered the Cabela's Premium Rod Building kit and would have though one would be included. Either it is not included or they did not send one. Any advice????? Or do I need to just go ahead and break down and order one??
Thanks a bunch,

bd--I've got the Cabelas rod dryer. I didn't order the rod build kit that you did, I just got the dryer about two years back. The chuck should have been included with what you got---prob just left out. The chuck leaves a lot to be desired. Holding with the rubber bands on the pins works fine--but that ribbed center cone that is suppose to press in to the end of the blank (pic on the left in the link), it won't stay connected. Falls out after a couple of mintes every time. I wud call Cabelas and ask for the chuck---even tho half of it won't work. I think maybe if you could put some double faced carpet tape on the cone first--it might hold, just don't go off and leave it running unattended. Don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks guys, this is the kit I ordered:
http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/horizontal-item.jhtml?id=0003511315280a&navAction=push&navCount=9&indexId=cat410036&podId=0003511&catalogCode=IF&parentId=cat410036&parentType=index&rid=&_DARGS=%2Fcabelas%2Fen%2Fcommon%2Fcatalog%2Fitem-link.jhtml.1_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20431&hasJS=true
This link may not work but the chuck was not pictured along with the other stuff. I called Cabela's and they said no "shaft attachment" came with the drying motor so I assume that means the chuck. I went ahead and ordered the one from Windknot's link. That should solve the problem.
Thanks again,
bd
By the way, I've completed the butt section except for applying epoxy and have to say I'm pretty pleased :)

Glad to hear it is going well bd. Just a word of caution, not to discourage you or anything---but the butt section is the easiest part because it doesn't flex. When you get out on the tip section wraps and the blank starts bouncing up and down--you may be inclined to recall some bad words-- from the past I'm sure. :) Keep us tuned in to the progress.

Thanks for the warning, Ole Man. I am taking my time with every step and re-doing anything that I'm not happy with. I will tread cautiously and do the same with the tip section. I'm sure you are right that the easy part is over but hey, this is pretty cool.
Will keep you posted,

Next I'll have him splitting cane ;)
BD,
Told you it was easy....The tip is the hardest part to wrap....but if you take your time it really isn't that hard. I have a "home made ebay" wrapper and it isn't the best thing in the world....you just have to find the point where the tip will "balance" just right. Once you have that, it's a piece of cake.

Rod #1 is now completed. Gonna let it set up for a couple of days and then try it out on some bream. Far from perfect but I think I accomplished my 2 main goals: 1) Won't fall apart 2) good enough to fish with. I'll know more about goal #2 after casting it.
Thanks guys,
bd
