Orvis web site has BBS reel on sale. I am looking at BBS V for 8 weight line for salmon/stripers. What comments do you have on this reel?

I bought one for my new short stick 3 weight a few months ago. The main reason I chose it was because the titanium reel looks so darn cool. I don't know or care about the drag because it just holds the line while I stalk little natives in tight streams.

You will obviously have different concerns fishing for salmon and stripers.

I use the mid weight version (Reel III) for chasing trout and bass. I've (ab)used mine for almost two years and it keeps performing well.

I like the large arbor to help minimize line memory and reduce the need for backing - and thereby saving some weight.

OldDawg, have you decided on, or did you get the reel yet? The Battenkill reel is a very nice reel. That said, I think it is better suited for line weight 6 and below. The reel that is on sale is best suited for weights 9-12, not for your 8 weight rod. A reel with a larger arbor would be much better suited. Either the mid-arbor, the large-arbor, or the mach IV would be best. If you're looking to score a deal wait till all the new 2006 models come in and score a 2005 model that may be on sale soon.
