View Full Version : Can a 6ft Bamboo rod be made longer?

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question, as I know very little about building rods, especially bamboo rods. But here is my sad story:

Last year I was jonesing to own a bamboo rod and found a new custom 6 foot 4 wt rod on Ebay made by a guy up in Tennessee. I don't know anything about the quality of the blank, but it has the phrase "Fishin Stix" written in red near the cork handle. It is a very nice little "small stream" rod and fishes great.

The problem is that I already owned an Orvis 6.5 foot 4 wt graphite rod (think they called it The Flea) bought primarily for small stream fishing and now wish I had bought a longer bamboo rod so I could use it on bigger water.

Is there anyway to take what I have and have a longer second section built to make the overal rod longer? Or would I be better off just selling this rod and looking for something else a bit longer that comes from the same blank.

Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom on what I might do.

Go and sell the rod, it will cost you a lot more $$$ to get a longer blank built - $150 or more for the blank, $20 for the grip, $75.00 for a good reel seat and the $100 for building it out and you end up with a rod that you could never sell, who knows what action it would be.

If you are interested in a very good condition 8' 5wt 2 tips - Herter's nickel silver ferrules, it was a kit rod from Herter's that someone built out and fished it maybe twice - perfectly straight $200 - send me an email - mike.popick@bellsouth.com

I agree with runner. I would sell one of them. Taper is everything and attempting to get a new section that has a viable taper\action for a longer rod would be an expensive experiment.

I don't know your entire rod collection, but I am curious. Why not keep the small boo, sell the short Orvis and buy a longer graphite? I don't know about the Fish Stix, but the shorter boos usually make sweet small stream dry fly rods.

I agree with what has been said, especially GTS's comment on keeping the 6ft boo, selling the orvis and buying a boo in the 8ft range. A lot of folks don't like the action of bamboo, especially the longer models. If you're interested in a longer boo, wait til the fall fling, I'm sure a few will show up and you can cast and see if boo is for you.

BTW, the rod that runner is offering is a good deal, makes me wish I had a couple of c-notes with nothing to do.

Thanks for guidance guys, I had a feeling it would not be worth trying to build a longer tip for the bamboo rod.

Concerning selling the short graphite rod to buy a longer bamboo; I love that little Orvis Flea and could never part with it. Come to think of it, I own six fly rods now (somebody help me!) and each one is special to me in some way. The only one I have little emotional attachment to is a Redington 8 foot 4 wt I picked up for $40 at a recent garage sale!

Thanks again guys,

There is no help for the addiction :) In fact, keep the Orvis and the Fish Stix and then add another rod, surely with only 6 you are missing some emotionally important length/weigths/actions :)

You know you are in too deep when you start naming them. Lets see there's Rachel, Veronica, Judy, ahh, Judy short and sweet, and Patsy, Hildegard (all 9ft of her) ;)
