View Full Version : Toccoa last Friday

I took last Friday off to give me a 4 day Labor Day weekend. The generation schedule for Blue Ridge dam was favorable on Friday, as the were not scheduled to start generating until noon. Me and a buddy left Kennesaw at 5:00 am and were at Curtis Switch at daybreak.
The action was a bit slow, but steady. By 2:00 pm I had landed 16 trout and my friend had netted 11. The water was much lower than normal, which allowed us to wade a lot further downstream than we normally can. We got into a nice deep pool just around the bend from the small Island and started pulling them out one after another.
As usual, the standard Toccoa rig of a caddis fly with a beaded nymph dropper rig did the trick.

I know you fly-fishing enthusiasts scowl at the avid spin fisherman but hear this. I was at Curtis Switch about a week after that on a similar schedule. 2 of us pulled in about the same amount of fish as you said said but probably well before noon fishiing 3" berkley trout worms among other things. I fought a brownie in the deep water just below the switch for about 15 minutes before being broken off. My best estimate is in the neighborhood of 15 pounds. Sounds outrageous but I've pulled in 3 pounds plus a few times and this fish could have swallowed them. You might argue that I didn't have the equipment but the fact is, I had it on the run when it got tangled in some very shallow tree roots. My apologies for the measurements in pounds, I am used to weighing warm water fish.

Spinboy,
Great report! I don't doubt it at all. The river's not full of those big guys but there are some in there. They can get pretty big eating those little stockers the state puts in at Curtis Switch. One 6" rainbow equals a whole lot of blue wing olive nymphs.

3" berkley trout worms
I'm gonna have to get some of those... wonder if those hawgs at Water's would hit them  ... do those worms have a scent? (illegal at Water's)... what else did they hit up there... hmmmm... just noticed the Toccoa is year-around up there :D
I know someone who uses them at Dukes ;) Except they are the wobblehead 3" pink ones. Not sure if the Berkley ones are sent free...

Try fishing the way he did, if ya wanna match totals for totals.. Or I could get my 8y old to go one on one with ya.. "Fly-fishing enthusiasts scowl at the avid spin fisherman" ??? Thats a pretty bold statement coming from someone with 1 post. I only scowl at people breaking the law when fishing, not how they are fishing..
To hell with the one fly contest, we should have a one worm contest.. Then we would'nt leave anyone out right???

The Berkley ones are scented so bad news for Water's and Duke's I believe. I'm not sure where you would come across some that were unscented. Please advise.
BPS, wobblehead brand.. Dukes tested, Browns approved..

The wobbleheads are indeed on the shelf at BPS but can also be ordered direct over the phone. Thanks to Skibum.
When I said "scowl" previously, I think I should have said something more to the effect of, fly-fisherman ignore us when we start talking about spin fishing but after more research, it seems like some of you guys just enjoy fly fishing that much more.
Maybe if I knew a little more about it, I would enjoy it too. I've been doing it a little while but am still very much a novice. :)
