Conasauga River

Used the Chestnut Lead trail to access the river. I hiked up and down the Conasauga River trail and found extremely low water with a temp of 62 F. No success catching trout.

Jacks River

Used the Beech Bottom trail to access the river. Again, the water was very low with a water temp of 64 F. In the morning we fished down to the falls and below, one small brown was caught right above the falls. Late in the afternoon, we fished up to about half a mile above the intersection of the Beech Bottom and Jacks trails; my friend caught two small browns and a bass of some kind. He was using a brown bugeye nymph. I hooked a small one, but lost it in some brush.

The Jacks River trail is in bad shape. I read reports of damage from the Ivan storm, but was surprised nonetheless. On a final note, we were visited by a medium sized black bear early Thursday morning. He climbed the tree where we hung our food bags and managed to knock one out of the tree. The bag crashing into the ground woke us up and we managed to scare him away.

Next time you might want to get a little further off the beaten path. On Jacks the area just upstream and downstream from the falls are the most heavily fished on the river, and where Chestnut Lead meets the Conasauga in the Betty's Gap area, dittto.
