The last two inches or so of my rod tip broke off last night.

It's new, but a relatively cheap rod. I would like to salvage it if possible. Any advice anyone can provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Derek

Derek,

If the break is clean, just heat the tiptop guide with a butane lighter (no soot) and it should slide right off. It may retain enough glue to simply slide right on the remaining section of your rod. That has to occur pretty quickly, and you might want to wear a glove.

You probably won't be able to tell a difference in its casting. I broke 2.5" off a 6' rod, but it works fine and I haven't replaced it yet.

This worked for me...

Heat the broken part over a flame until the tip ring loosens. Pull it off and re-glue to the tip of the main section. I used five-minute epoxy and it's been fine.

Stating the obvious - use pliers. ;)

Another option would be to epoxy a one inch "ferrule" inside the broken tip, allowing a half inch to remain exposed. Glue the exposed end into the rod, making sure the tip top aligns with the next guide. Buff the joint with some steel wool to smooth the connection if you like.

The trick is to find a ferrule that will fit inside the hollow rod tip. This method of repair is a little more asthetically pleasing to me but......will probably affect the rod's action slightly due to the added weight.

Don and Trout's method is easier to do if you don't mind a slightly shorter rod.

Thanks fellas, I did what you suggested and it worked beautifully.

My wife also thanks you, as I don't have to buy another rod!! :D

Dak....you blew it. A prime opportunity to purchase a new rod has been wasted! ;)

On behalf of Trout8myfly, Drifter and I, we apologize profusely for upsetting the karmic balance that should have qualified you for a kitchen pass to buy a new rod!

My personal philosophy is that repaired rods can be fished if you want, but the damage should always justify the acquisition of a new one!
