I have been fishing for trout my whole life and on the hooch for about 15 years. Saturday I took an old friend to Abbotts bridge, he has been flyfishing for several years. When I invited him he returned the favor by bringing a few extra rods for me to try. An Orvis, and one I really liked I think he said the name was Williams. I cought several nice browns and I am hooked. :D
I had another friend give me a nice rod and reel several years ago, he claimed it cost him several hundered dollars in the early 1980's. My question is what is a good starting point for line? I do not know the wt of the rod, it seems to cast well with a cheap 6wt line. I am not wanting to spend my last dollar, but I am not into junk and know you get what you pay for.
Thank you for your help.

I think your best bet would be to go to a specialist in fly lines, like Unicoi Outfitters or The Fish Hawk. They can determine the line weight needed to properly load your fly rod and help you choose a line that is feasable, but at the same time do everything you need it to do.
