North Georgia Trouting Report
October 13 & 14, 2005

Thank God for our Fall Break at school; after taking the PSAT's on Tuesday and Wednesday I was in much need of a trout fix. Fortunately enough for me, Dad is able to control his schedule and can take off when he wants/needs to. So, you know how this goes... spur of the moment decision to stay overnight in Cleveland, even when we live close enough to drive home (just because it's more fun) and fish all weekend. True trout bum lifestyle, I suppose.

Anyhow, we arrived in Cleveland early Friday morning and booked with our regular lodging facilities. It was off to the Chestatee WMA (Wildlife Management Area) for a wee bit of fishing on Boggs, Frogtown, and Dicks Creeks. Well, we only made it to Boggs and Dicks (below the falls) due to time dwindling away and the setting sun. Boggs was fishing quite well-- small dry flies and nymphs were key in our success. We both took several small rainbow trout over the course of about 2 hours of fishing. Next, we made our way to Dicks Creek for 2 more hours of fishing-- fishing was slow. We both caught 2 rainbow trout. According to other anglers, who claimed to have fished all day: "Fishing has been, ummmm, ugh today."

We planned to eat at Turners Corner Cafe, a family favorite, but chose West Family due to a long line at the Corner Cafe. Arriving back at our room around 9 PM, we sorted through 24 dozen flies we had recently purchased.

We awoke at around 9 AM this morning, checked out, made our way to the Huddle House on the outskirts of Cleveland and then drove to the Chattahoochee WMA for a days worth of fishing on the Chattahoochee River. Well, those plans got cut short because the 'Hooch was sloooooooooow. So, we made our way up in elevation and hit Low Gap Creek. Low Gap is fishing very well if you don't mind hiking in a bit. Dad tried the lower section (below the upper tree line) and I made my usual way on upstream to all my good honey holes. Soon enough, Dad made his way up with stories of only 1 trout caught. We fixed that quick-- a total of about 12 trout were taken in about 3 hours of fishing on Low Gap.

What a wonderful weekend for Trouting in North Georgia. Get out there and explore!
