View Full Version : Humbled at Dukes

Well, since I encouraged everyone to abandon all their responsibilities and head to Dukes Creek on Wednesday if it rained, I feel obligated to report the results. What exactly are the ingredients of humble pie?

It did rain early Wednesday morning, enough to blow out the Soque, Chestatee and Chattahoochee Rivers. Perfect, I thought, for Dukes. There were no openings when I called on Tuesday but by late Wednesday morning, several anglers had abandoned the creek so I booked two slots for a fishing buddy and myself in the afternoon. The creek had a little more volume of water than my last trip there on Sunday afternoon but it was not muddy at all. Stained with tannin from all the leaves in the water but not off-color due to runoff. Bottom line is I landed two rainbows and my buddy one. We both had other fish on and at least 4 of them were in the 18" - 20" class but we didn't bring them to the net. Just one of those days when it didn't happen. On checking out, we looked at the fishing reports from the other anglers and even the guys who had fished all day caught only three or four fish. Some consolation I guess. Some interesting notes from the day: Saw two big rainbows going through the spawning ritual. Most of the fish were in shallow water; riffles barely deep enough to cover their backs. All the places that held fish on Sunday were barren of fish yesterday. I would love to know what the barometric pressure was yesterday. I held off for almost an hour before trying a Y2K Bug but as soon as I tied one on, I hooked three fish in the next ten minutes. Of course they all got off but, obviously, that was a fly that worked yesterday. Pink San Juans worked also. The thing about a day like yesterday is that I can't wait to get back over there again and try to do better. What a great stream!

I wish I could have left work and met you up there, even if I didn't catch a fish. I checked before I left and the stream was booked up until Jan. I have never fished the stream before April. How is fishing between Jan and April? I would guess that the trout like the colder water. Let me know.

Winter fishing is great! Typically, you're dredging the deeper pools but now and then there's a hatch and you can take them near the surface. They are booked for several weeks out but, with the full day schedule, they will allow you to get on at the last minute if someone leaves early.

Jimmy,
Not sure if it was rising yesterday or falling. (Rising I would imagine)
It was moving nontheless!
I am a pressure fanatic and watch it like a hawk when i'm deer hunting. There is always better wildlife movement when the pressure has stabled on the second day of a serious pressure change.
Wednesday was a serious pressure change!

Glad you had a good day on the water. Humbling or not its just good to breath the fresh air.

I'm with you on the pressure thing, Trey. I don't follow it closely enough but I do think it has more to do with our success or failure than anything else; except maybe our own skill level and sometimes even that doesn't seem to matter much. It was a great afternoon to stand in the creek.

Hey, I spent Saturday evening in Athens with the boys from Gray. Most of the evening we were having a good time. Funny how just a few seconds can spoil your whole day.

Path, Sorry for the gleeming hope only to get jerked out from under ya!

Today would and should be stellar. What you are looking for are the steady consistant weather days. No mater if it is raining or sunshining. The barametric pressure changes as the pressure fronts roll in and out. Even if it rains for a week straight. Those days in the middle when the pressure isnt rising or falling are the days the wildlife will return to normal patterns. The rise and fall are what you want to avoid. Not that you can't hunt and fish and see deer or catch fish. It just seems the wildlife is at its normal patterns when the pressure is constant.

That's helps a lot Trey... so tues, today, thurs, and friday all should be good... i was thinking from your and Jimmy's posts that the best days were only the one day after the pressure stablized after the front...

And next week, it looks like (at least) mon?, tues and weds should be good.

Well... it looks like friday's chance for fishing is now none :( ... there's a small chance monday.

Did anyone catch a cancellation at Smithgall this weekend with all the rain?... i may try that next time... but sure am concerned about my de-barbed hooks accidentally snagging on the ranger's shirt... that would be embarassing :o... maybe i'll just carry one lure ;)

Guys.... there are probably some cancellations at Dukes today one could take advantage of....

Weather not bad... 50% chance of rain with high in the 50's... and best of all, we've less than 0.7" for this whole weekend rain event so far.... definitely not a washout.

Update: sun trying to peak through... but there's still a line of showers that could pose a threat this afternoon...
