Wow! I fished the section upstream from 53 bridge on sunday late morning into early afternoon and it was dead. A buddy of mine from TU and myself threw everything we had in our boxes trying to figure out what the fish wanted and couldnt get a strike to save our lives. We hooked 4 fish between us, and even those where lethargic at best. The only fish we got to hit were caught deep in slow water and the back end of some nice runs. Tried midges, eggs, nymphs, sjw's and nothing caught there eye. Glad to hear that its fishing better and there are some nice fish to be had.

I was there the 2 weeks before on Dec 1st and struggled to get 7.
There may have been another stocking?
It is both science and art with alot of luck mixed in!

You must have gotten them stirred up for us....you may have read this already but 2 of us caught 43 fish from 2:30 to 5:30 Sunday. Granted, we were cheating....using spinning tackle. Every fish caught on something pink. Ask Dad of 7...he said he was pulling them in left and right this week on pink y2k's.

because most of the fish I pulled in were in the 12 - 14 inch range with a few larger ones mixed in. A few had swollen fins on the side which is a pretty good indicator of stockers sometimes.
BTW..I was a little harsh on ol' Tom yesterday and I apologize. My son was reading the posts here yesterday and called me on it so if a 13 yr old thinks I was harsh then I must have been. Sorry Tom.
He is right, though, on one point. It was getting a little silly to be catching fish on pretty much every cast. And the hole right under the bridge was like a pay pond...one after another. I went downstream and I had to work a little harder but still it was one fish on every 3 or 4 casts. I wonder if it was because of the system coming in. Maybe one of the biologists here can chime in on that. I'm gonna take my son up there next Wednesday and let him spin a few. I'm looking forward to spring when I sign him up for casting lessons so we can flyfish together.

that you mentioned that about the swollen fins...I was looking for that and thinking it was strange that I wasn't seeing it. Out of all those fish, I only saw 1 like that. The rest were either really fat 12 inches or beautiful long and slender 14-16". They still could have been recently stocked but they were healthy.

Is it the close quarters or do they fight in the tanks while they bring them over? It really doesn't matter but I'd still like to know.

I know if the hatchery raises them from eggs, they will often not have pectoral fins at all, just nubs...this is because of the rubbing. However, it doesn't seem to affect them at all.
yeah most of the time they are rubbed off due to close quarters all they're life but it doesn't bother them at all, but about swollen fins...I have no idea cause usually stockers are missing they're fins rather them being swollen...but who knows...maybe something new...
keep them flies outta the trees

Dad of 7, try this to get your 13 yr old started with a fly rod (worked for mine!).
Give him a fly rod, teach him the simple roll cast, put on a size 12 or 14 peacock and soft hackle wet fly. All he has to do is roll cast cross current, let it drift and swing out, hang in the current, then roll cast again.
I often use this fly trying to make something happen, and am letting this fly drag around down current and looking in my fly box, picking my nose, etc and get a hit! This method is how my son caught his first fly-caught trout. It really is a no-brainer, and the smile in the pictures is something I will never forget, or him either!

Who's gonna teach me how to roll cast????? I'm as new to flyfishing for trout as he is. But I did buy him a rod for Christmas and hopefully in the spring we will take a few classes together and by the summer we'll be experts and we can talk about double-hauling with the guys in another forum...lollollollol ;)
