Is there any place to camp out on the Ami DH section? My son wants to go camping and is driving me crazy until we do. Thought about seeing if anyone else had a son about Levi's age and maybe we could make this a NGTO outing. Build a fire, pitch a tent, crank up the generator and fish a while. I haven't been camping since I got out of the army.

Dad of 7,
How old is your son. Mine is 13, and I also live the Woodstock area.
Email or PM me if you are insterested. Would have to be after the new year.
I've got a soon to be 13 also.

A very well behaved kid. His mom does a great job raising him while I'm at work. My wife is a teacher that homeschools our kids and teaches him how to be respectful of others. I'm a very proud daddy.
I'd love to hook up with you guys and do a little camping and fishing. I don't have a lot of gear but I do have a large tent, a generator/inverter from Honda which is very quiet and will keep a tent warm. I can pick up a few other things like a camp stove, lanterns, etc. You guys let me know. I talked to Levi about it yesterday and he was very excited about it. I guess the main thing is to figure out where to camp near the Ami. Ideally, we could find a spot right on the DH section of the creek.

As a fellow homeschool dad and fellow trouter I'd love to wet a hook or two with you.

Dad Of 7, Speck
I Googled the Dawson Forest WMA and camping and this is link to a website dedicated to camping in WMAs.
http://www.n-georgia.com/wmacamp.htm
From this site, I found a phone number, which I'm assuming is the WMA office for the Dawson Forest WMA. It is 6 miles west of Dawsonville and is home to the Amicalola DH.
(770) 535-5700
Maybe this will help you on your search?
I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure camping along the DH of the Amicalola is not permitted. This has happened in the last few years.
I think it was getting too trashed and also some folks were "camping" for weeks if not months at a time.

I'll check that out.
Speck...Let me know when and we'll do it. BTW..Whare do you go to church?
I was going to ask where you went to church? We're both are in Woodstock and I thought you may attend the same church as I do.
South Jackson County area
I have to work Monday and have a meeting Tuesday night but after that I'm free until Jan. 3.
I hope to get in at least 4 trips during that time but if I were a betting man I'd guess it'll only be 2 at the most.

Levi and I are going to be at the Amicalola Creek DH at Steele Bridge. We'll get there about 7:45ish. Let me know if you're interested. Does your son spin or flyfish?

Dad of 7,
When are you going? Me and co-worker are planning to go up tomorrow (Saturday) morning. May see you there?
Why do you prefer the steel bridge entrance over Hwy 53? Haven't you caught fish at both recently.
By the way, sent you an email.

I work on Saturdays and I take Wednesdays off. Levi and I are going up about 7:30 Wed. morning for a few hours. I have reservations at Smithgall Woods to fish Dukes Creek on the 24th but I'm taking a lot of heat for that from the wife.
I have never fished 53. I have only been out there once but I really enjoyed fishing by Steele Bridge.
Dan
On my last trip to the Ami which was a few weeks ago I saw a tent, maybe 2, on the East side of the river down from the Steel Bridge. I don't know excatly where but I think it was close to where a small stream comes in from that side.

Sam does a little of both. He spent the day with Josh Barnett back in August and picked up a lot of tying and casting help.
Don't know if I can pull off Wednesday but I'll get back with you if that changes. Hope you and Levi wear 'em out.

I don't mind camping out there but I just want to know if it's legal to do so. Plus, I want to be near my Yukon so that I can store stuff in it. You have any idea if it's ok to camp near the parking area? Is that public land? Any idea who I can call to find out?
Thanks in Advance,
Dan
Levi has never been flyfishing. I bought him a Redington 3/4 wt 8' rod for Christmas and I have traded for a nice reel to go on it. I am signing us both up for some classes in Feb. I have been flyfishing for bream before and I have done a little flyfishing for trout but I need a few lessons before I give up my spinning gear altogether. If there was another kid flyfishing I'm sure he'd want to try it.

I have a 13 yr old who fly fishes w/ me occasionally, and 7 & 9 yr old who want to, but just a little small to put in the river just yet! LIve b/n Kennesaw/Woodstock.
A great place to camp is Unicoi St Park in Helen. Little farther than the Ami, but a great place. They have tent spaces, RV spaces, excellant bath houses. And right next to the Smith, 'hootch in Helen, around the corner from Dukes (probably too technical for the kids) and not too bad to get to Tallulah R. The hootch in town is very easy for a kid to wade!
As posted earlier, I don't know of a place close to the Ami. But my camping book lists Amicolola St Park. Limited to 16' trailers, but not sure how close to the Ami.

The benefit for me at least is that the Ami is so close to home and I work on Saturdays so I could come home Sat night and then get up to the Ami Sat evening and still set up in the daylight, maybe still with enough time to throw a few casts before I have to build a fire. I was wondering if it would be ok to camp by the parking area or maybe even on the other side of the creek from there. I don't know if that is legal. Is the land private or public there? I wouldn't mind camping there because I want to camp by the creek.
BTW, Levi fishes Dukes with me often. He has been pretty successful there so I think he'd do fine there but he does spin fish that creek.
Any suggestions?
Dan
