View Full Version : Low Pressure + Warm Winter Day = Great Fishing

It appears as if Jimmy "Guru" Harris was right when he said he thinks the barometer has more to do with a trout's willingness to feed than any other factor.

With rain clouds approaching and barometric pressure dropping on Tuesday, the fishing was amazing. I was fishing a friend's property somewhere in the northern third of Georgia, and the fish were biting to say the least.

Since it was vacation, I didn't crawl out of bed until about noon. The weather was perfect. It was great to fish in a tshirt for a day in late December, and also to be able to feel my fingers when tying on a fly or putting on some fresh tippet.

It didn't really seem to matter what was thrown at them as far as fly selection goes, but the most effective was definitely a white and orange egg pattern dredged deep. There were two things that were imperative, however: SPLIT SHOT and DRAG FREE DRIFT.

A minimum of two BB split shot, 9-10 feet of leader, a wooly bugger or a Hullis (??) nymph trailed by an egg, Y2K, or soft hackle, and a big yarn indicator up top seemed to be the winning formula for the following:

A 16" wild rainbow
4 fish in the 20-22" range
A 23" rainbow
A 24" rainbow
A 24" brown
A 27" rainbow

I also lost 5 fish that were in the mid-20's, one of which could have taped somewhere near 30". To sum it up, it was ridiculous. My arm is sore from all the fighting, but I'm not complaining!

So, watch for a warm day in the middle of winter when rain is coming up in the forecast and that pressure is dropping, and the fishing should be fantastic.

Jesus, I hope I'm wrong but the only place to catch 27 inch trout in Georgia is on trophy regulated pay-to-fish streams, i.e. behind Unicoi Outfitters in Helen, and other such locals. Again, I do hope I'm wrong.
Good observations none-the-less.
Any pics?

For once, yes, I have pics. But not until I get them developed.
