View Full Version : Smith Creek D.H.
This morning started off slow, but as the day grew warmer the trout turned on somewhat. Ended up catching 20, most were on a yellow and orange egg patern, the rest on a rainbow prince. It was a beautiful day to be out.

Hey Lurch! I think I saw you in the parking lot when I came back to the car in the afternoon. I was going to introduce myself but I looked up and couldn't find you. I was wearing an AU (Auburn) hat and driving a green Escape. I think you were parked two cars down.
Anyway, i had the same fishing experience but with different flys. I couldn't pick up anything in the AM on anything. Moved way down to towards the end of the DH around 1:00 and switched to one of my streamer patterns and started to catch a bunch in the deeper runs and pools. Nothing in the shaded areas, only the sunny spots where the water was a little warmer and where my streamer was flashy. Where I was catching fish the rainbows were nice and chunky and really popped the streamer!
Sorry i missed you.

Pat, he probably saw you but didn't want to be seen associating with someone wearing an Auburn hat. Ha! Hamp Cross had a guide trip on Smith yesterday and they had a great time. The secret fly was a white woolly bugger with the marabou tail trimmed short so they couldn't short strike it. They weren't stripping it, just dead drifting. He thought a small white zonker would work well also.

Jimmy...I'll just ignore the hat comment! :D I never seem to have a white wooly bugger in the box...usually because I have lost them all running them through deep cold water, winter pools :) .
The streamer I was using was basically tied like a clouser with gold and mirage flashabou and a couple strands of blue and red flash. Its one of my Tuck Rainbow patterns.
Like I said it only was working where I was geting some flash in the sunlit pools and runs. I'll stop by next visit and grab some white woolies. I got to admit though doing a fast strip off the end of a drift and having a heavy strike was fun!
Thanks for the info! Is Unicoi open tomorrow?? feb 2.

Yeah, we're open; counting year end inventory so we're hoping folks will come in to give us a diversion. Sorry bout the hat comment but with a photo like you've got on the board here it's just too easy a target.
Happy New Year!
