It's not "live" bait if you happen to accidentally snag a dead one while your line is in the water ;)
Knowing him, he'll catch the live Shad first. :p

I talked to Chris Scalley and Henry Cowen about the prospect of a shad kill happening. They don't seem to sure when it could happen because the weather is so crazy. If we get a big chill for a week or so the conditions would be right. The lake has no thermocloine and the water temperatures are close to a kill, but 65 degree days keep the shad a swimmin'.

Luke,
Bill Couch posted a report from Chris S. & Kyle under the Fish Tales forum. In there was this paragraph.
Lake Lanier has officially "turned over" as of December 23rd with the lake's surface temperature reaching the same temperature as water drawn out from deep within the lake at Buford dam. In other words, the water temperatures within the reservoir have become uniform, and as cold weather continues through January, February and March the lake temperatures will continue to decrease depending on how severe the weather is in 2006. The more frigid the air temperatures, the better, because cooler water temperatures in the lake cause higher mortality among blue back herring and threadfin shad populations. Depending on the severity of winter weather, anglers will begin to notice seagulls on the lake near Buford dam and below the dam along the riverbanks. Shad and herring are pulled through the dam during water releases, and flocks of gulls will swarm the upper reaches of the river as they prey on these dead and dying baitfish. Dead drifted or softly twitched Gummie Minnow flies and white Zonkers will catch trout as far down river as Paces Mill (48 miles).
The WSB Radio LR forecast was for Jan to be mild overall, but Feb getting cold again.

After spending time with our newest Hydro member Rusty Fowler we have a plan and are just waiting for it to happen.
Report to follow;)
