My wife's aunt has 72,000 acres in Wyoming just south of Sheridan. We are planning a trip up there and I am wondering if anyone has any experience fishing up there and could tell me where to fish. I have given my wife's aunt the 3rd degree but she's old and hasn't a clue about fishing although she did say that she has a lot of water on her property as well as a few rivers. I will try to get an exact location asap and post it here. She leases her land to other ranchers and she told me that I would have to contact them to see about fishing but I'm gonna try it. We are going up there as soon as the baby is born in June so figure about late July or early August. We'll just pack the Man-Van up and take 2 weeks vacation.

Any info would help and be appreciated.

Other than driving through, I know nothing about Sheridan proper except check that land for oil.

However, Sheridan is at the base of the Big Horn Mountains which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. It is full of trout streams too.

Do not pass up the opportunity to take the drive from Sheridan to Greybull on Hwy 14. Twenty-two years ago my geology field class did some road-side mapping along that road and I would compare it to Hwy 212 from Red Lodge to Cooke City, Montana as the most scenic route I have ever been on.

There was a steak house up in the middle of the mountains where we ate from which we sat and watched a herd of elk come down into the meadow at dusk from the surrounding mountains.

BTW: this part of Wyoming is out in the middle of nowhere. Unless you are a geo-nerd like myself, this may be a pretty dull drive. If I remember correctly the drive to Sheridan is through some very sparsely vegetated land that will look like desert. And there is a lot of nothing starting just past St. Louis.:) Bring plenty of DVD's for the kids.

Addendum- If you are crazy enough to drive that far with a car full of kids, take Hwy 90 and take 2 or 3 days through the Badlands and the Black Hills area of South Dakota (Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse monument, Bear's Tooth, stuff like that). A lot of great looking rocks out there too! I'm taking the kids to Yellowstone this summer, if I decide to drive this would be the route I would take.

You know if I'm crazy enough to HAVE 7 kids, I'm crazy enough to drive with them up to Wyoming.

My in-laws told me aboutthat steakhouse and raved about the views, if it's the same one. I'll get the name from them and tell you.

Thnaks for the info guys,

Dan

Dad of 7,
Give Paul Puckett at the shop a shout 404-237-3473 or email him off his website at www.catchandreleasepaintings.com

Paul lived in Wyoming, worked at a flyshop and guided a bit, for several years. He's a wealth of info on the area.

I have a friend (former Ga. boy) that lives and guides out of Cody. It rained and muddied a lot of the water my last trip out and we made a drive over to the N. Tongue River which is not far from Sheridan. It was the most fun fishing day I have ever had. Nothing big but I caught a N. Tongue grand slam (cutt, bow, cutt-bow, and brook), got run out of a great fishing hole by a moose, and watched a real rootin tootin cowboy and his dog herd cattle. The Greybull was blown out so I didn't fish that. You could call Scott for another source of info.

If you visit the website, go to the newsletters section and pull up the Summer 2004 newsletter. About half the pictures in the photos Scott posted for our trip were on the N. Tongue.

The Wind River Range is amazing. I would recommend checking out pretty much any stream up there. Talk to the fisheries people up there and they can give you a pretty good idea of what's going on. Golden trout and brookies the size of footballs is all I have to say.

I guided out of Cody for a couple of years and know the area waters quite well. The North Fork of the Tongue is excellent, don't pass up the riffles and just hit the pools, though. If you can get on over the Bighorns and into the basin, you've got the Greybull River, all native cutthroats & some whiteys, the North Fork of the Shoshone, which is cutthroat, rainbow, and cutbows, all big, and the lower Shoshone, which has brown, rainbow, and Yellowstone and Snake River cutts. I would highly recommend doing a float trip there, esp. when the Mother's Day caddis hatch goes off. The Clarks Fork is not too far and has rainbow, brown, cutthroat, brook, grayling, and whitefish in the lower section out of the canyon. Call Tim Wade or Chip Andrews at North Fork Anglers, www.northforkanglers.com. Scott Sweebe is from Dahlonega and is a hell of a lake fisherman/guide. Now lives in Cody as indicated by Moye. Cody is a bit of a drive from Sheridan, but the scenery is outstanding through the Bighorns. I can go on for hours talking about fishing in Wyoming, and it has been good the last 3-4 weeks out there in Cody. Mild January, lower Shoshone has been really producing lately. BWO's and midges, and the midges out there are big.

I would highly second hitting the areas EG recommends. And if you are going to go thru the Badlands and Black Hills/Rushmore, etc, You need to hit Custer Park or similar and drive the kids thru and see the buffalo! An experience in and of itself! HAve fun. I am jealous.

I went out to South Dakota with Dad a few years ago and definitely recommend the side trip through Custer SP to see the buffalo. Needles Highway is a gorgeous drive as well. On a touristy sidenote, you may as well hit Wall Drug just to say you have been. You will see the signs for about a hundred miles.

I may be wrong, but I think the Powder River is fairly near Sheridan. I believe we passed by it on a cross country driving trip on the way to the Bighorn in Montana. It isn't too terribly far on to Fort Smith Montana on the Bighorn River from Sheridan. Exact distances have been forgotten. It all runs together after 27 hours of being in a car

Many of my friends call me Tommy. I am only 5'7" and could pass as one of eight, don't eat a lot and have my own gear. I promise not to ask "how far", not even once. I will be quiet as a little mouse. I will take up a small amount of space. When do we leave?
