I usually use gudebrod thread on rods. However, I remember some guys talking about using different threads from sewing stores to get a few more choices. I also remember them saying something about certain threads will mess up when you put the finish on them.

What brands of threads can I use for wrapping rods other than the normal companies you see in catalogues? Also, what type of thread can I use or not use (silk, rayon, cotton, etc)?

I had a hard time finding info on rodbuilders.org

Thanks for the help-

I get YL1 silk - from a sewing shop in Marietta Ga for $5.00 a spool - lots of color - it's about a size 0 or 00

In addition to the silk that runner mentions, a safe non rod building specific thread is Sulky Original Metallic. The product number on the spool will start with a 142 and be in the 7000 series. It is a tad smaller than size A thread, but works fine for guide and decorative wraps.

I say safe, because many sewing threads are coated with silicone so that they will pass through the sewing machine. Silicone wreaks havoc with finish causing fisheyes if it is not carefully coated with CP. For example, a lot of builders like the colors and color retention of Maderia, but it needs to be well coated with CP. If in doubt do a test run.

Stick with nylon. Polyester works, but has a different elasticity that can take some getting use to. I think the color would have to be very special to try to use it. Do not use rayon or cotton.
