I am gonna kill two birds with a stone here hopefully.

James, Any info on fishing in or near Grand Rapids,Michigan. I have a friend that just moved there and I won't go visit unless I can make a fishing trip out of it!!

Rob, I need a private tying lesson if you still are giving them?

Thanks,

Trey

Hey Trey,

Bird 1: Give me a shout at the shop on the steelheading...I'll have some spots for you to go.

Bird 2: Tying classes $45/hr including all materials and tools for pvt lessons.

You have six more birds to go before limiting out.

James

In downtown GR you can stand in the Grand River and dodge spin fishermen or head up to the Pere Marquette River (Baldwin, MI) and have it pretty much to yourself...steelhead in early spring, salmon in the fall.

You have several options for general fly-fishing from the Muskegon River (30 miles north) to the Manistee and Au Sable. I lived and fished up there for 14 years and caught more bass on a fly rod than I ever have here in the south. Trout fishing on the Manistee and Au Sable can be good to excellent. Plan your trip for April and fish the Hendrickson hatch on the Au Sable or for June and fish the Hex hatch on the Manistee.

I lived in Michigan for a short while and my parents currently live in Kalamazoo, which is only a mile south of GR. Definetely hit the Rogue River, which is no more than 10-15 mins north of GR on 131. There are several access points, but the section of the river below the spillway is my favorite. For more info call the Great Lakes fly shop who's info can be found by googling them. The Rogue gets regular stockings of browns and rainbows, and holds some nice browns over from year to year. It fishes quite well for kings (usually sept-end of october, but this year went into november). Steelies are in the river at this time of well, and have caught some right through the dead of winter. The best time to be on the river is in the spring, i have found its steelhead run to be fantastic and have taken many pretty fish on into early may. The good news is it doesnt receive half the pressure that the better known waters get. The Pere Marquette is a great river, but in the warmer months is near impossible to fish during the day because of boat traffic. The muskegon is also not to far north, with Newaygo being the best point to fish. Anything below Croton Dam is nice water, and it has nice trout as well as steelies and kings. If you want anymore streams or advice, send me a PM, i have fished dozens of streams in that area, everything from the smallest creeks to some of the bigger streams like the Kalamazoo and the Grand
