What do you guys know about Powell rods and reels? I'm thinking about purchasing a "timax" 5wt combo.

has been around for a long time but ownership changed hands in the last couple of years. Have not tested lifetime warranty as of yet or customer service other than buying a axl-3wt. online, prompt delivery. Currently fish LGAs in 5,6,&8 and AXLs in 7&9. Medium fast action, good fit and finnish and very castable. Powell rods are more popular on the west coast, east coast is Sage town, IMHO Powell's match up well with Sage. I would not hesitate to buy a discounted TiMax combo.

I appreciate the info. Right now I can't find the exact model I want at the same price I've found some others. I'll probably go with St Croix if I can't find very soon.

Drifter: thanks for pointing out the STP deal. I have been in the market for a decent 4 piece rod. I just ordered the 9 foot 4 weight. Now all I have to do is figure out how I am going to explain yet another flyrod to "she who must be obeyed" :bang:
PS: I found a link at www.naughtycodes.com for an additional 10% off anything at STP, so I ended up paying $116 for the rod ($128 with shipping) . The 10% discount basically negates the $12.00 shipping charge.

I have the 3wt. teamed with SA Trout, lays out a really nice dry. Handles some lead when you have to. IMHO great deal.

Powell is/was having some financial difficulties. A lifetime warranty is only as good as the company. Just a heads-up so you can factor that uncertainty into your decision. Sweet rods, though!

Cablela's has a pretty good deal on St Croix Avids right now. It's the older models but I have one and enjoy it thoroughly.

I'm looking to replace the line on my reel for my 4 wt XL. I was using Orvis and would like to match some new line to this rod. Anybody have in experience with a line that they like on this rod. It's 80% an Adams rod.

i use the SA mastery trout series for dry fly flinging on mine. works great for that purpose.
Thanks Mike. I'll check it out. I'll stop a shop and see if they'll let me throw some.

that SA Trout, have it on my AXL 893, very castable and you can gently drop a dry to spooky fish. Been using it for a year now and no sinkng tip issues, floats high, doesn't coil in super cold water.
Nickel: did you seal the end of that line? Looked at some RIO Grande this weekend it's a cork. So many choices!!

No sir, fly shop nail knotted 6" of mono with a perfection loop without dressing the knot, remember the day well because I put it on a new birthday reel. Haven't even cleaned it yet. Have heard good things about Rio lines also, guess I'm too brand loyal to try something different but I love when a product does exactly what it is supposed to do time and time again.

Nickle Stogey: finally fished my new Powell Advantage XL 9 foot 4 weight today. Punches out a nice cast and fishes very well. This rod will be my main squeeze while my Orvis 5 weight is being upgraded with some new hardware.
