This is the pattern that I submitted for the midge swap this Winter. I bought a similar pattern many years ago out West but have doctored it with my materials and some flashabou.

Hook- #18-22 Tiemco 2487 “scud” hook
Thread- 8/0 brown
Body- Chocolate and tan (or black / white; chocolate / white) Coats & Clark “upholstery” thread

Wings - Flashabou
head- Built up brown thread

Directions –

I tie in both colors of the heavy upholstery thread (purchased at one of the big craft stores) at the hook bend and then tie off the thread (to avoid getting tangled in the thread while winding the body)

I wind the body by alternating colors every wrap (ie one wrap dark; next wrap light; next wrap dark). For expediency, I sometimes wrap both colors at the same time, grasping the threads near the hook with my thumb and forefinger and wrap tightly, hand over hand.

One wrap short of the hook eye, I let the two bobbins hang and then tie off the body threads with the finishing (8/0) thread.

Next, I tie in a 2-3” strand of flashabou near the eye, parallel to the hook shank, with half the length of the flashabou hanging over the eye. I then fold the flashabou extending forward of the eye, backwards to create the second wing.

I then finish by building up the head with the finishing thread and finally, trimming the wings to the desired length

This pattern is one of my secret “go to’s” when the fish cant decide what they want. I had great luck the last few weeks on the DH. I have found that it works everywhere.
