hooch wma 4/23

Fishin' Mortician and I hit the hooch from the checkin station to low gap creek. I caught 15 and he caught 14. The big fish of the day was a nice 12"er. Fishing was slow at first but as we got into clearer water it picked up. The hot fly of the day was a brown island park special. Just a nice day to be out.

Ive never fished the island park special. Im going to tie some up this afternoon. What size were you using?

Ive only fished the WMA once but it wasn't during trout season so the fishing was poor. If I fish up there this week where should I start?

Not during trout season? The Hooch WMA waters are closed during the off-season ....

Ok, I wasn't right. I was there at the end of October, the Vandy vs. Ga weekend. That is right before the season closes. Despite that I still didn't do well. Must be me?

Now that that is taken care of;

where should I fish if I go up that way and with what?

Yeah I've fished that area late October for several years now and have NEVER had much luck. It's a lot better in May and September.

Check station to Low Gap is the best water on the WMA, IMO. Low Gap to headwaters campground is also good, especially if you want to avoid the crowds on a busy day. Smaller water up there and (from my experience) slower fishing and smaller fish. But still good water.
