Wife and I went on our yearly camping trip to my old stompin' grounds in the Tellico watershed of TN. We stayed up in one of the FS campgrounds and had a great time. Each morning I hiked down into the wilderness area. This particular stream is pretty good size down in the gorge and it is just stunningly pretty water.

It's special regs, wild fish and I only saw 1 other human down there in 3 mornings of fishing. This river produces some bigguns, the kind of trout measured in lbs, not ", but I could not, could not, get my grubby hands on them. I made up for it by catching great numbers of little 6-8" bows.

Water temps ranged from 62-65. I fished everything in the box, including muddler minnows, crawdads, etc. But the best fishing was with Royal Wulff, Yellow Sally, and Tellico nymphs. Each evening at 8 there was a nice Sally hatch and I fished it in the mile or so of water that runs along the FS road.
Lots of pretty things to look at.

Sunday, I drove down to the Green Cove Motel and store for some bags of ice. My idea was to fish the North River on the other side of the drainage. But I decided to break with tradition and fish the Tellico. It's been at least 6 years since I fished this river. So I got the $5.50 daily pass and joined the crowds. I dredged some buggers with 4 splitshot in the pockets right by the hatchery. Brought 5 to hand, and 4 of them continued their journy with me:

Haven't done that in a while and dang was it fun.

On Sun. evening, as I was sitting by my pool waiting for Sallies to happen, I heard a bunch of commotion up in the woods. Pretty soon, I saw some big wakes thrashing around up in the next pool. I sat down on my rock and got out my camera just in time. These guys wanted to get by me, but just couldn't get up the nerve to do it. This video is kinda fuzzy and almost 2 mins long, but here it is: 3 otters in a wilderness river.

All in all, a fabulous weekend.

whisperer sez: hey, G......great pics and a priceless video.

can you help me with a question. i'll be heading to citico/tellico later this month and need information on the daily permit. do any of the streams other than citico and tellico require it .... specifically, double camp? i have conflicting reports on that.

also, can you report on any of the more remote streams ... n. citico, s. citico, bald river, north river? tia

regards, TW

Sorry TW, I do not know where the permit is required except the Tellico. That river is heavily stocked every week and no fishing allowed on stocking day (Fri.?). Permit section is from NC state line to Turkey Creek.

I see your pm/email is off. Drop an email if you want more info on Bald and North. Both are excellent and well worth fishing.
