View Full Version : Threading a hook or fly
Do you insert tippett into the eye with the hook upside down? Or doesn't it matter? Please answer with no funny remarks.

That's a good question. I have never even thought about it. I just hold the fly and tie the fly on. I would guess that it doesn't matter. If the fly is very small, since I have huge mitts, I have a Tie-Rite that I use to hold the fly and it holds the fly upright so maybe that is the correct way. Who knows?

This is in the ask the experts thread, so note that I AM DEFINITELY NOT AN EXPERT, nor even that knowledgable....Hopefully someone who has ben accused of such will come along and clear it up for us all, but....
I have often wondered the same myself and have been told the following by a very knoweldgable guide after asking: main variable - type of knot you are using. For the clinch, or improved clinch, It doesn't matter, but for the Orvis knot, (my favorite) you are supposed to come up through the fly. Im not sure if this is because it is easier to visualize that way, or because it affects how the fly lies as a result. I have also heard someone saying he didn't like the tag end of the knot facing down. hmmm...might be a little picky. I dunno.

Good website on basic knots that has animation and explanations for those who never got their merit badge....
