We had a big rain event here in the Pacific Northwest the past few days. There were record river levels on some coastal rivers, and big rains in the mountains, too. Up on Mt Hood, it had already snowed some this year. The weather system was a tropical jetstream that brought record warm temps and massive amount of rain. There is a little river called the White River that is a trib of the Deschutes, it drains the east slope of Mt Hood. Up at 5000 ft, it is usually barely a trickle.

Here is Hwy 35 crossing the White River, looking downstream, taken by me last winter from the White River Snowpark:

I work with a bunch of construction types, and got these pics of the White River that were taken on Tuesday. This is the same bridge at the White River Snowpark. The photog is standing on what used to be the road, looking south, on the right you can see the guardrail and snowpoles, where the river used to be about 15-20 feet down below this guardrail:

I venture to say that you will not get to Timberline from Hood River this winter. Here is the downstream side of the same bridge:

Here is the White's new riverbed:

This is the highway at the Boyscout Camp:

Is this a bad thing to have in the road?!?

I was looking at the pictures and couldn't even figure out what I was looking at! Then I realized --- roads, and bridges! That is awesome and not in a good way. Wow, thanks for the great shots. Hang on up there, looks like it could be a rough winter!

Here's a few from the coast at Tillamook:

The main coast hwy - Hwy 101

The Sandy River near Portland

Unfortunantly, the floods hit after an extended dry spell during which the salmon couldn't get upstream. Now we have this problem

I have great concerns for this year's salmon spawn.:bawl:

That last picture is a sad sight for such a nice fish, but what a great picture.

Look at all of 'em stacked up in the ditch. Chums are endangered in Oregon too. This could well be the end of some of the Chum runs.
