From WRD trout stocking coordinator Perry Thompson (706-947-3112).

Plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas trout stockings in the dozen or so "catch and keep" streams are unfortunate casualties of last summer's extremely high temperatures. With survival of trout committed to the 2007 season at stake, those trout sometimes held for holiday stockings (a lower priority program) had to be released in early August to create space in our hatcheries. Places like the Tallulah River and the Chatttahoochee River through Helen will not receive the holiday stockings in 2006.
Right now, great trout fishing opportunities still exist in the state's delayed harvest streams, which have been stocked this fall, and in many other year-around streams like the Lake Lanier and Lake Blue Ridge tailwaters. On an even brighter note, projections from the state's trout hatchery managers indicate a steady supply of quality trout will be available for the 2007 trout fishing season.
Holiday stockings are an added bonus to the trout program, and happen only in those years when we are able to hold and grow those "extra" fish for that purpose. Hopefully we'll have some next year.
