Buck’s Wired Stonefly

This is my variation on the Wired Stonefly pattern developed by Jeremy Barela.

Hook: Any heavy 2x shank nymph hook #12-18.
Thread: Burnt Orange 6/0
Bead: 5/32 or 1/8 copper colored brass bead.
Tail and legs: Tan or dark brown colored goose biot.
Abdomen: Silver and Copper Ultra-Wire (medium size).
Thorax: Sulpher Orange Lifecycle dubbing

Slide your bead onto the hook and clamp in the vice. Start thread behind the bead and wrap back to just above the hook barb. Tie in tail with biot material, placing convex side facing in so that the two biots "sweep away" from each other. Wrap your thread back up to the back of the bead, covering the biot tag ends.
Cut piece of silver and copper wire and place the tips of each piece of wire inside the bead, laying the wires parallel to and on opposite sides of the hook shank. Tie in the two wire pieces by wrapping the thread back to the hook barb to the point where the biot tails start. Then wrap the thread back up to the front of the hook.
Wrap the two pieces of wire forward, making sure to keep them very close together. The bi-colored wires give this pattern a great ribbed effect and lots of flash. Once the wires are up to the back of the bead head, cast off the excess and tie down with the thread.
Wrap the thread a short distance back from the bead head and tie in two opposing biots for the first set of wings. You want these wings to have a slight upward angle.
Dub your thread with a small amount of sulpher orange nymph dubbing and dub a thick thorax just behind the bead head.
Tie in a second set of opposing biots for the second wing set. Tie these in just behind the bead head, and give them a slightly more pronounced upward angle than the first set of wings you tied in.
Wrap a few good wraps behind the bead head to secure everything and whip finish.
Apply a drop or two of head cement to the final thread wraps and you are done.

Fish this heavy nymph as you would any weight nymph. This is an awesome DH fly and is my go to nymph. It catches fish when nothing else will. For a great combo, tie in a small Starling & Purple of other small midge pattern as a dropper off of this Wired Stonefly pattern.

Enjoy!

Great looking stonefly Buck!!! I have been tying alot of wire bodied flies lately and have been having some good luck on a stonefly I tie with a Tiemco 200R #12 hook, 1/8 Gold Bead, Copper and Green Ultra Wire, Amber Goose Biots, Olive Dubbing, with a black think skin back and a piece of flashabou copper john style over the back. I think any combo of the wire adds some flash and the DH fish just love them!!!

If the name is not already taken, I propose the name of this fly be called a "Buck Henry" - at least that is what I am going to call it when people ask what I am using - tied up 8 this weekend, can't to try them out. Mike
