Fishermen,

I supervise the physical education teachers in Cobb Schools. We offer Outdoor Education at the HS level and am interested in promoting trout fishing, conservation, ecology etc. Many of our schools do not have equipment for this however. We teach backpacking, orienteering, cooking, angling etc.

We have a meeting of those teaching Outdoor Education this Tuesday 2/20/07 at North Cobb High School at 8:30am-11:30am. Does anyone have any resources for fledgling programs, loaner equipment, etc?

I would like to train these teachers to a Fly Fishing School and hope to schedule a class for all in early June. Let me know if you have an interest, idea, or resources.

Peace
Mark

I remember taking outdoor Ed at Harrison in 96. It really was a joke, it was an easy A, more of a way for misfits to smoke cigarettes in the woods. I don't know what the program is like now, but to criticize the class I was in 11 years ago, I would say that there should be an emphasis on ecology, like what they learn in biology, but specific to GA. Like Chattahoochee, other rivers and streams, water management issues with AL and FL, bugs, fish, otters, and don't be afraid to make it difficult, where some people get C's for not studying enough. Throw in the natural anthropolical history of the state's natural resources, how the Creek Indians used it, you know, comparative historical anthropology and geology. I think it would be a much better class. Maybe you are already doing that, but I'm just referencing the class I took in 1996. Good luck!

Fletch,

I am sorry you took joke classes and smoked in the woods during your school dayz. You give a great impression for all............. and undermine all good efforts to engage teens in life-long physical activity.

I'm sorry if I have offended, I'm giving an objective first hand observation of the class I took 11 years ago, with blunt truth and constructive advice. I gave you a perfect opportunity to explain how far the program had come, and shine on yourself a little bit. Why didn't you take that opportunity?

And how did that meeting go today?
