View Full Version : Replacement Tip Impact?

Hey gang,

I have a curiousity question related to having a replacement tip made for a bamboo rod. As most of you know, my Jerry Clark Penta rod had a tip destroyed by a freak streamside dog encounter (see "Does your Dog Bite" thread for gruesome details). Anyway, I am having a replacement tip built by none other than Glenn Brackett, famed member of the Winston Boo Boys. Glenn and the boys recently parted ways with Winston and are now running the Sweetgrass Rod company out in Butte, MT.

My question relates to the impact of having a replacement tip made on the collectibility of a cane rod. Now Jerry Clark rods are not considered high end classic rod collectibles, but his Penta rods are somewhat rare and considered very well made and desireable to own. Does the fact that I am having a replacement tip made by Glenn Brackett enhance the collectible status (and thus value) of this rod or does it hurt it?

Like I said, just a curiosity question really. I plan to hang on to this rod as it is an amazing fishing pole, but have been wondering what impact having a Glenn Brackett made tip would have on the rod's value. BTW, Mr. Brackett is going to sign the tip for me.

Ciao,

Personally I would think that if just about anyone but the maker of the rod did the tip, it would lower the value. The exception being possibly glen. It may become more valuable because of he did it.

It'll lower the value, no matter who did it, even if the maker himself did it. The only way that the value wouldn't go down is if the maker keeps extra strips from every rod that he/she makes and can match the node stager to the one remaining tip. And I don't know of any makers that do that....it's kind of tough to let extra bamboo just sit around waiting for someone to break a rod. That being said....it'll not lower the value as much as only having one tip. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Glenn's no god or anything. ;)

I agree with Robert. Original almost always commands the greater price on collectibles. But it will be cool to have a Jerry Clark/Glenn Brackett combined effort penta fly rod.

Yeah but if God ordered a fly rod, he'd order it from Glenn ;)
