Well, make that one Flea! I finally found me a bamboo Orvis Flea that I could afford and this pretty much completes my bamboo rod quest (yeah right!). I bought the rod from a dude in Belgium and got it for a very good price. This paticular Flea was built by Ron White in 1969 and like all Flea's is a 2 piece 1 tip rod. (I know, better watch out for them bamboo eating dogs on the Hooch! :) )

The owner did not like the small cork handle and reel seat that Orvis put on all the Fleas, so he had had the rod professionaly modified by Mike Clark of Southcreek Rods. Mike Clark is one of John Gierach's favorite rod builders and is also a personal friend of Mr. Gierach. Mike has been building rods for over 30 years and does great work, so I know that the mods were done right. The rod was fitted with a slightly larger cork handle and a nice downlocking reel seat with wood insert. He also had a nice agate stripping guide installed. Anyway, because of these mods, the rod does loose a bit of value in the collectibiity department due to no longer being in original configuration. Due to this fact, the guy came way down on his original asking price and gave me a smoking deal.

I have always wanted a bamboo Orvis Flea as it is considered one of the great short rod bamboo tapers of all time. It has amazing power to punch tight looped casts underneath low hanging branches typically found on small streams. Anyway, here are a few shots of the rod that the previous owner sent me. God willing, the rod should be here by the end of the week. I won't sleep well until I know that she survived the long trip from Belgium intact!

Great looking Orvis rod. Let us know when you get it- just curious how it survives the trip as well. How long is the rod?

She is a 6.5 foot 4 weight. An absolute Orvis cane classic!

Congrats Buck. I hope I get as lucky. As an old golf coach used to tell me, you make your own luck by working your a** off.

Isn't this the second or third "last boo" :)

Great looking rod. I know you boo guys are persnickety (can't spell this word so anal might be better), but sure seems like a nice custom touch to have the grip/seat better fitting. Can't wait for the fish porn.

I think I'll wait for that beauty to get to Kennesaw before I make my way over there. I wouldn't want to miss the chance at viewing that rod. You got a smoking deal, way to go. Just let me know when you get it and I'll be right there. Oh yeah I'll bring money for my rod too.;) Mark

No brainer on the reel for my new baby; a classic Orvis CFO III (I have one of the old British made green ones).

Hey Buck, congrats on your "score". Fine rod. One question, Why do you treat your handles, and are you going to treat this one? :nervs: TRW

Good question. Nope, I leave all my bamboo rod handles untreated. With classic bamboo rods, the closer the rod stays to it's original configuration, the more value it retains.

I did seal a few of my graphite rod handles though. I got the idea after GonetoSeed (NGTO Rod Building forum moderator) refinished an old Orvis Green Mountain rod for me with a new reel seat. As a finishing touch, he sealed the cork grip with Casy's Tru-Oil (gun stock finish) and I really liked how it felt and looked and how it protected the cork. So I got a wild hair one night and treated my other graphite rods as well. Like I said, it is not for everyone but I like it.

Clark,

Was just wondering if the rod ever showed up? If so, I'm sure you've used it by now. Give us details, man, details!!!
